Ivor replied to Raymond Jacob's discussion Due Ostinati
"Hey, Raymond,

I remember your previous work and detecting hints of Terry Riley, Philip Glass and Mike Nyman. I suppose I felt their minimalist styles which I find a refreshing change now and again from "regular" music. Two pieces that snared me as…"

Ivor replied to David Lilly's discussion (Conlon Nancarrow inspired) crazy, sinister idea; but has it happened?
"At least one of Bösendorfer's pianos is wired for midi so is effectively the same thing. I think VSL take advantage of this in their offering with its gargantuan space requirement: nigh 300Gb."

Ivor replied to John Driscoll's discussion Songs for Departure - FEEDBACK REQUESTED
"I listened as far as 5'18", mesmerised by the mood the work cast. It felt almost surreal at times, fitting the words well.
You've taken remarkably good advantage of the big compass and dynamic range of these instruments, the tempo (generally)…"

Ivor replied to Jon Corelis's discussion Oh-oh
"You hit it dead on there and futher up. It can replicate on the basis of probabilities but won't understand what it's doing or be able to aim its efforts to a particular audience.
In fact it would have no reason to want to compose music for human…"

Ivor replied to Jon Corelis's discussion Oh-oh
"I agree to the extent there are "grey areas" but most of what you descrbe is technological advance, Military stuff will still be under control of people sitting in comfortable penthouse offices operating playstation-like controllers commanding…"

Ivor replied to Jon Corelis's discussion Oh-oh
"It may eventually grasp a hold in the popular scene... I mean, blimey, it doesn't take much intelligence to hammer out a few nice-sounding chords to a formula. Pondering some pop music and stuff backing documentaries, films even, most people don't…"

Ivor replied to HS Teoh's discussion Notation of accidentals
"To me, yes. To avoid ambiguity. "

Ivor replied to HS Teoh's discussion Notation of accidentals
"My notation software offers two choices, traditional and Vienna (i.e. 12-tone/serial/ modern) but the problem with traditional is partly re-inflecting double sharps and flats to adjust them a semitone. It would probably be worse with microtonal…"

Ivor replied to Raymond Jacob's discussion A personal exploration of electronic music
""And, if you can direct me to recordings of your analogue synth work I would look forward to listening"

Unfortunately, most were on 1/2" 8-track tapes that were eventually discarded as I now have nothing on which to play them! I think some bits…"

Ivor replied to David's discussion string quartet no. 12
"At last I found time to listen from 12' to the end.
The scherzo, to me for most part, sounded demonic and I bet a nightmare to play. I thought I heard a lot of harmonics, sometimes swiftly moving. It's a clever construction and I'd have loved to…"

Ivor replied to David's discussion string quartet no. 12
"Oh dear...apologies. I've heard that Beethoven was quite good at music - he formed a public company still in business today, I'm told. But I did say your work is in an entirely different vein!
It caught my ears because the piece in question was the…"

Ivor replied to Raymond Jacob's discussion A personal exploration of electronic music
"Hello, Raymond,

An interesting piece well done. Title seems most apposite.

I too have had a (fairly long) flirt with analogue synthesisers; still have the remnants of my ETI “Project 80” build. It used CEM chips (Curtis Electromusic Specialities),…"

Ivor replied to David's discussion string quartet no. 12
"Hello, David,
Well, dolente was about right and if I may say so, it felt acerbic at times, occasionally powerful almost to the point of crying out.

I was able to listen up to the 12 minute mark - possibly where the next "movement" / section…"

Ivor replied to Rowy's discussion Halloween Music
"Last night thanks to some pre-hibernation insomnia I was looking through some abandoned bits and pieces hoping to find ideas. Alas, I didn’t.
But I came across this fragment. I don’t know if it’s creepy but it never set out to be comforting. I was…"

Isn't that obsessive playing of the organ?

Ivor replied to gregrorio j's discussion "Dilemma"
"Intriguing, engaging, musically exciting. Nice ensemble, contemporary (which is fine by me). Has a spontaneous feel about it. A pleasure to listen to.

Except the words were a touch indistinct so I'll run my computer through an outboard bandpass…"

Bio

I cam from the earlier, canned forum. Was known there as "Dane". IT has been my stage name since I started playing lounge at receptions, occasionally hotels and restaurants - something I've more or less given up now.

I had a problem signing up because of the dreadful password demand. Still don't know how to contact the admin if I can't sign in. The site seems to lack the usual "contact us" or "contact the staff" buttons.

So, if I diappear it's because I can't sign in.
