Music

Below is a link to my music - it's updated as new tracks are available (at time of writing, I'm working on track 6, which I'm feeling is by far the most intersting of them all....).

I'm always looking for feedback so that I can develop and improve my composing.  Such feedback to date has been invaluable.  But do be kind and constructive - I'm brand new to composing with virtually no background in music theroy.  It might be helpful to point out anything that could significantly improve how the music lands with a listener if it were incorporated (rather than just suggest something from a list of what might conventionally be expected) - and it might be nice to balance it with anything that works well.

A short introductory video about how this journey started for me can be found at - https://youtu.be/31I2cUCKYUI?si=2ioZ-7GmC4EH53vS

And my finished tracks to date can be heard at - http://heartfulhealing.co.uk/music with commentary and more information about each, or, else hopefully, in the player below.

"Great that you document the feedback - sometimes it can make sense many months later when initially it goes over our heads.  Great also that you're aware of other personality types and ways of experiencing feedback - it's not an obvious or common…"

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Dealing with Criticism as a Composer
"This makes a lot of sense.  It's similar to how I'm coming to think too.  I like to emphasise that the balance between how much "theory" and "intuiuition" (both imprecise terms) are optimally used will vary from person to person - there's no correct…"

"Kudos for such a positive attitude (apart from the pre-emptive self criticism...).  You seem to have turned a painful experience into something postive and constructive and acknowledged the insight in it."

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion New String Quintet (and some important questions about it....)
"Thank you for the honest feedback David.   It seems I haven't represented myself very well in my comments about music theory.   I do respect it and recognise its importance but have perhaps been too intense in how I have urged a place for intuition…"

"There are many reasons forums die.  one principal one is when a number of the members even if it's a very small number lose the ability to speak respectfully and to comment in constructive ways rather than venting frustrations in a confrontational…"

So, I finally finished my 5th String Quintet today.  The movements are as follows:i-Allegro (0:00)ii-Adagio (02:48)iii-Andante (06:15)iv-Allegro, ma non troppo (10:08) https://soundcloud.com/guy-shahar/track-12-string-quintet-no5 I have a few…

"Thanks for sharing this Dave.  It's a good insight.  I have found - especially when I was at the very start - that even genuine critiques were painful  - and I think probably for the reasons you mention - that i wasn't really in a place to do…"

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Composer - Programmer Partnership
"Thanks David - maybe I'll look into it.  Scoring is a big deal - not sure how skilled you have to be to make a fully engraved score for professional musicians.  Ideally I'd love someone else to do that for me, but that's a luxury I might not be able…"

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Composer - Programmer Partnership
"Thanks David - that's kind of you.  I don't read music, so notation software won't typically work for me.  Maybe one day I'll get to the stage where it can...  I think I do need a partner based on my current level of expertise in programming, and my…"

I’m a fairly new composer (7 months in) and I’m finding that there’s one thing I’m REALLY struggling with. Adding dynamics to my music in Cubase is proving really hard for me. I don’t seem to have any aptitude for programming, and I find myself…

"Hi Dave.  I'd rather not go through the conversations again (and bring myself down...), but it has ranged from decent feedback delivered in a condecending way (which is very unfortunate, but livable with), to comments that state that the music is…"

Bio

I'm a brand new composer - started this journey late in life, though always believed I'd have an aptitude for it if I tried it.  I finally managed to get it set up on my computer in July 2024, after several failed attempts, and have been really happy, and actually quite surprised and amazed with what's come out so far.

Here's a video about how it all happened -
