Music

Below is a link to my music - it's updated as new tracks are available (at time of writing, I'm working on track 6, which I'm feeling is by far the most intersting of them all....).

I'm always looking for feedback so that I can develop and improve my composing.  Such feedback to date has been invaluable.  But do be kind and constructive - I'm brand new to composing with virtually no background in music theroy.  It might be helpful to point out anything that could significantly improve how the music lands with a listener if it were incorporated (rather than just suggest something from a list of what might conventionally be expected) - and it might be nice to balance it with anything that works well.

A short introductory video about how this journey started for me can be found at - https://youtu.be/31I2cUCKYUI?si=2ioZ-7GmC4EH53vS

And my finished tracks to date can be heard at - http://heartfulhealing.co.uk/music with commentary and more information about each, or, else hopefully, in the player below.

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Dealing with Criticism as a Composer
"Well done for at least having a few fans.  That's already a great achievement.  I don't think I have any (someone approached me on Soundcloud saying she was my greatestt fan, but it turned out she wanted to sell some promotion service to me....). …"

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Do We Need Music Theory
"Thank you, David.  That's an interesting and useful distinction between the 2 aspects of theory."

6 months into my composing journey, I've finally attempted a short allegro movement for the first time. Is it normal that it's SO much more work than a slower piece? It's the opening to my 5th String Quintet, and includes also includes double stops…

Guy Shahar replied to Rowy's discussion Let it snow
"How did you get the vsl problem resolved.   I've just bought their solo voices and didn't realise you couldn't use them offline without paying an extra 50 quid for special usb ilok thing that's probably very easy to lose…   what were the problems…"

Guy Shahar replied to Rowy's discussion Let it snow
" That sounds like a nice bit of Christmas fun.   I also like the one you shared with David (less Christmassy but perhaps a better piece).   I'd love to hear some of your free counterpoint if you're willing to share - sounds very interesting.
I have…"

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Is This Recognisable?
"It's a great track, Ivor, and you integrate the voices very naturally!!!
I'm more of a beginner, so I know my writing is still a bit clunky and undeveloped, but I do really like how the harmonies turned out on my track.  I took down the preview…"

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion If I Fell by The Beatles - Reworked and Reharmonised for 7-Voice Choir
"Thank you very much David. I'm afraid of the score issue is a limitation of my ability to notate.  I got cubase to create the score but could only quantize to eighth notes . If I quantised to 16th notes everything went out of alignment. So where you…"

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Is This Recognisable?
"Thanks a lot David.  Yes, maybe I'll raise the volume of the melody line slightly - that might help it a bit, at least for someone who knows the original (it was actually much louder before and stood out too much and I think I've…"

Hi - I've just bought VSL Solo Voices, and thought that a good way to learn to write for voices might be to make an unusual cover of a well-known song. I've chosen "If I Fell" by The Beatles. However, as the cover is so differently arranged from…

Guy Shahar replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Invitation to "Intuitive Composers" (& resources coming soon)
"Apologies for the assumption, Rowy (it didn't have anything to do with formal training - just overwhelming social conditioning probably.  This is a healthy lesson to be more conscious and aware).  I've really appreciated all your input and should…"

"Thank you, Dave.  Yes, I'm still so new at this so I'm open to trying all sorts of things and seeing how they fit for me and which composing style emerges as the one that works best for me.  As you say, I'm not wanting to restrict myself in any way…"

Bio

I'm a brand new composer - started this journey late in life, though always believed I'd have an aptitude for it if I tried it.  I finally managed to get it set up on my computer in July 2024, after several failed attempts, and have been really happy, and actually quite surprised and amazed with what's come out so far.

Here's a video about how it all happened -
