Ollie King-Britton replied to Mike Hewer's discussion Technique in composing.
"Whether or not any of this is relevant, I hope it's interesting.
I'm not sure what this post is referring to specifically, so to cover several grounds...
I have several methods for coming up with ideas:
1) Melody first: I seem like a bit of a weirdo…"

Ollie King-Britton commented on Ollie King-Britton’s status
"Thank you for sharing David, and many thanks for listening to the Ballade. I am fortunate enough to have a partner who is an excellent pianist who performed that piece for me, but he is too busy to learn all of my music. My own playing skills fall…"

Ollie King-Britton commented on Ollie King-Britton’s status
"Apologies for the lack of specifics. This post was regarding solo piano and chamber music, but mainly solo piano. There are many intracacies I would find it difficult to capture using a VST, but I obviously don't play as accurately as a digital…"

Ollie King-Britton commented on Ollie King-Britton’s status
"I have one or two pieces I would like to share in video form, but being more of a composer than a performer (I am no virtuoso), they contain a few recognisable mistakes. The price the listener pays here is being taken out of the flow of the piece…"

Ollie King-Britton replied to Saul Gefen's discussion Adagio for Strings
"Thank you Saul, I love your use of harmony here. It's wonderful that original diatonic harmonies can still be crafted in 2024. It feels like it's constantly growing and evolving, despite the texture remaining stable, which is a tough skill to master."

Ollie King-Britton replied to HS Teoh's discussion Fugue in A
"Excellently composed! A real treat! Fugues are tough to write, but you kept it interesting and functional throughout.
Those chords at the end may cause the pianist's wrists to spasm slightly, but it's only a matter of time before human pianists are…"

Bio

Background

I'm not a professional composer, but I've been doing it for many years. I mainly compose solo piano and chamber works, but have been known to dabble in rock and electronic.

Style

My style is generally tonal and thematic, but I don't shy away from extended tonality/harmony where appropriate for the mood and style. I look up to Rimsky-Korsakov, Poulenc and Fanelli among others.

Ethos

I would rather evoke an emotional response and take a listener on a journey than attempt to do something clever.
