So...I came to a conclusion after my last song. I'm listening to great composers all the time, trying to learn, and I'm doing them instead of me. I'm comparing my stuff to theirs, which is crazy.…Continue

First I'd like to say, I go by Doug.  Douglas was just for the sign up for this site. :)Second, I always feel a little intimidated here.  I've never had formal music training.  Most I can comment on…Continue

"Hi, Douglas, I suspect most composers into acute chromaticism and atonality struggle at times, don’t I know it. My ‘obsolete’ folder contains far more false starts, abandoned efforts than my ‘approved’ one. So I feel…"

Hi, all. I didn't get back to the replies from my last submission and I didn't want to bump the thread, but thanks for the compliments and the advice. I always take both into consideration when starting the next project.I've been wanting to experiment more with "not so pretty" compositions. I wanted to do something with more drama, more atonality, more chromaticism, more dissonance. Not sure how much of that I accomplished, but I was struggling with this a bit (I'm trying to develop an ear for…See More

"This is a good sounding, very colorful and expressive piece. You are making good use of orchestra sounds and phrases, harmony and melody.  What's missing here to my ear, as Joost has noted also, it doesn't seem to breathe or ebb and…"

So...I came to a conclusion after my last song. I'm listening to great composers all the time, trying to learn, and I'm doing them instead of me. I'm comparing my stuff to theirs, which is crazy. I've only been at this for 6 months or so. Unreasonable. That last song nearly killed me. I think it took over 2 months to write and I struggled hard. I put tons of pressure on myself.  I wasn't having fun. Why do it, if you're not having fun?It will come. I need to be more patient, and in the meantime,…See More

I was always musically talented. I taught myself guitar and piano when I was younger and wrote some songs. I would say I "dabbled" in music. It didn't mean as much to me as it should have and I got away from it. Recently, the coming of the digital age has excited me again. The tools and resources we have now are nothing short of amazing. In the Spring of 2020, I decided I wanted to get back to music and see what I could make of my talents. I already owned a copy of Notion software, so I began using that and really putting some work into it.
