Hello, everyone! I look forward to joining in on some musical discussions as most of my peers aren't all that into sitting for hours deciding between a "dotted eighth and a sixteenth" and a "quarter…Continue

"The recorder is a very agile instrument. If you want to experiment with making this more adventurous, try giving it some more athletic moves, so to speak. some rapid runs, triplets, sextuplets, etc. And some independent melodic content, so that it…"

"Thank you! I have a couple other piano pieces that are similarly mostly chords, so it helps to realize that what I've actually written are piano accompaniments; I will add lead instruments accordingly.  Thanks again! Matt"

"Thanks for the comments, Bob. "The player is the final arbiter" is a good insight, and I'll be keeping that in mind when searching for the balance between these minuscule note details and ease of reading for the player. "

"Thanks for the comments, Gav. In order: 1) Good to know, and I have fixed it. 2) Naturally resolved after moving the pedal markings. 3) I use MuseScore, which does support octave clefs, which I have used. Great suggestion. 4) I did think of that,…"

Bob Porter replied to Matt Baker's discussion Question about Notation
"Matt, If you read piano music I would suggest looking at a lot of it to see how others have notated things. If you play by ear, I guess you have to go with you gut. But in general simpler is better. As long as number three gives you the effect you…"

Gav Brown replied to Matt Baker's discussion Piano Composition in E minor
"Hi Matt, A couple of notes on the score: 1) pedal markings should be below the bass clef; 2) spacing between treble and bass clef is rather wide and should be tightened where possible; 3) It's ok to use the 8va as you have done, but would…"

Piano Composition in E minor

This is one of the first pieces that I actually composed on the piano (instead of mostly in the software). In fact, I even notated it by hand before putting it into the computer. I tried to notate how I play it, though the timing of the live performance is much less rigid than the computer playback. I'm interested in feedback of any sort that stands out to you. I tend to write mostly on instinct, but I welcome comments about the form/structure. Also, I'm not super familiar with piano notation,…See More

Matt Baker replied to Matt Baker's discussion Question about Notation
"Thanks for the insight, Bob. The problem I have composing for piano is that I learned piano on my own after learning guitar, so I think and play it more like a guitar (more chord/fills focused); I mostly try to write out how I hear or play it--or…"

Bob Porter replied to Matt Baker's discussion Question about Notation
"The third version is more to the point than the others. I really depends on what instrument you  are writing for. The first version is not for piano. The second might be a piano reduction, besides being hard to read. Know your target…"

About Me (Must include at least one paragraph of biographical information about you as a composer) - blank or minimal answers on this line will cause your request to be rejected. Include a link to your website if you have one.
I starting playing trumpet in 6th grade. In 12th grade I started playing guitar, which has been my main instrument for the past 18 years. I recently got a job as a music teacher, so I've been writing a lot of rearrangements of songs for recorder and other classroom instruments. I've written several pieces short for piano and a couple longer pieces for orchestra. I'm hoping to gain feedback on my pieces as well as to ask technical questions about notation and whatnot.
