- As an amateur violist I've used membership of local ensembles and orchestras as a way of getting pieces performed. I tend to an impressionistic style but never write off the chance to break away and do something "contemporary" or light or even 'pop'. My music education put me off serial techniques well and truly and probably did more harm than good. As for composing I still sketch on paper - no notation software is fast enough nor allows me to spread different tries on the table to edit. I then do mock-ups on Reaper relying heavily on its midi editor. I hope to comment and bring some pieces to the site if things work out. I tend to limit my things to around 5 minutes as I've found people are often happy to afford that time or less - and it's easier to get them played: local groups seem more willing to fill in spare moments of their gigs with the work of local composers. That's me!

Incidentally, I see you live in southern England (why I thought you were American I really don't know). I live in Hampshire, where do you live if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Dane,
I see from one of the threads that you compose on paper and don't know how to produce PDFs. If it helps, my printer has the facility to copy and save as a PDF - the printer itself wasn't expensive (around $100) but the ink refills admittedly cost a small fortune. You might consider shopping around and buying something similar.
