The Neglected Quintet

Been a long while since I have posted here.   Kudos to Gav for keeping the site rolling.Here is a piece that I did several years ago for woodwind ensemble. The title refers to the fact that I wrote the first half of the piece and then let it sit unfinished for months.  One afternoon, I sat down at the computer and the second half of the piece fell right into place.I have recently been creating videos for my various pieces.  The accompanying video for this one is intended to match the…See More

I am an amateur composer who composes for the sheer enjojment and curiosity of it. My primary inspirations have been Reich, Copland, Bartok, Stravinsky, Zappa and Glass. I have just recently started composing after a lifetime of wanting to do so. For my own amusement, and to the chagrin of my family, I play - and play with - a variety of instruments including mandolin, piano, alto and soprano saxophone, Anglo concertina, button accordion and Irish whistle. I also play tenor mandola in the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra.

Thanks for your incredible compliment! I love what you've done with "Apples and Oranges" using mandolin. The mandolin is a beautiful instrument. Why did you stop playing them? I'm glad that my music inspired you to start playing it again. It's funny how things occur. When I wrote "Apples and Oranges" (A&O) for the contest I didn't take the contest too seriously. I just found it an opportunity to write two intertwining melodic lines within certain constraints. Since A&O didn't place well in the contest, I sighed "oh well" and thought the contest was probably a waste of time. But your having liked it and using it as the inspiration to dig out your mandolins proves to me that, despite how difficult music is to write and have appreciated, it's still important to "put it out there". Thanks, you made my day!
