Just wondering what others think about this. For me, producing a useful score - one that could be submitted to professional directors/orchestras - is hard work. I start on paper in short score; then move it into a daw. By then most if not all the…

Ivor replied to David's discussion Piano Nocturnes 6-9
"Apologies I haven't been on to reply until now. The reason I asked for a score - really - was, here and there, to find out how you did it! I'm a mediocre pianist myself but did beaver away at a couple of Liszt studies and the "Summertime" episode…"

Ivor replied to David's discussion Piano Nocturnes 6-9
"A pity you've been unable to leave a score as The works seem pretty demanding. So far, if anything, I enjoyed the 8th a little more - possibly because it seems less abstract if that makes sense. The opening bars during which the right hand fades to…"

Ivor replied to David's discussion Piano Nocturnes 6-9
"I've listened to the first one, No 6.
Enjoyable, lively for the most part but with rather beautiful slower episodes that came across with great warmth. It's always good to be self-critical (which you seem to be) and it comes across as an…"

I finished a couple of chamber pieces recently, this one last month. Having given it a tart-up today, rendered it. It'll probably be part of a 3 movement work if I keep it.The strings are muted throughout. Large orchestral scores were giving me a…

Ivor replied to gregrorio j's discussion Venus - for piano (5'15")
"An interesting and enjoyable work. It offered several impressions although I’m not listening to it as a fugue as HS Teoh writes above. At moments it was sensuous, at others seemed a struggle between polarities; sometimes abrasive, sometimes…"

Ivor replied to HS Teoh's discussion "Standard" paper sizes for orchestral (conductor's) score?
"It would still be difficlt with massive scores that could possibly be fitted onto A3 but quite a squeeze. I'm thinking of Havergal Brian's Gothic Symphony, last movement, that runs to 55 staves.
I personally do my scores for sending round on A4 if I…"

Ivor replied to HS Teoh's discussion "Standard" paper sizes for orchestral (conductor's) score?
"Quite much of my scores contain many empty staves per page but I still like the it to have all the staves as it gives continuity from page to page. (in he earlier incarnation of this foru and elsehwere ask if I could run one off omitting empty…"

Ivor replied to Ken Lindner's discussion Just for listening enjoyment: Under Sail
"You hit on a related problem here: how to get to a list of my submissions (music / scores). There's no way to check whether a piece I'm about to submit has been posted before - something I might have changed - ok it isn't the same piece but it could…"

Ivor replied to Ivor's discussion Solo for bass oboe
"Perhaps worth adding about orchestral samples, I don't cheat. (Maybe I should). I treat instruments as what they are, their dynamics and strengths/weaknesses and adjust volume via velocities rather than the faders. So that, for instance, if a flute…"

Ivor replied to Ivor's discussion Solo for bass oboe
"The whole composing process - but yes, my inability to realise what I'm hearing in my head with virtual instruments; my failure to anticipate development without losing this minute's inspiration. Development that forces me to rethink what I've…"

I've had so much trouble and frustration recently attempting an orchestral piece that I gave up. There comes a point where it gets too much. Last time that happened I gave up composing altogether for several years. So I turned to writing a solo to…

Ivor replied to Kristofer Emerig's discussion Accept or decline membership?
"I'd go along with this - otherwise why not give it a throw and watch carefully. See if any complaints arise. This site is unusual in that one has to request friendship before messages can be exchanged so there's some discernment there. If I received…"

Ivor replied to ALEXANDER J GUILLORY's discussion Mixed Media Anthology
"I suspect that any improvements possible depend on the other mixed-media components. It follows your story well but more variation could be added through dynamic change. It's the same mezzo-forte throughout (middle loudness). Obviously I don't know…"

Ivor replied to Ivor's discussion The Sun - Music for Orchestra (5m 40s)
"Hello, David,
Many thanks for your kind comment.
It's more of a scene/ atmosphere than a programme and inclines to be fairly static in which variations in the density may suggest ephemeral shifts in the mood.
If anything it could do with pruning…"

Bio

I cam from the earlier, canned forum. Was known there as "Dane". IT has been my stage name since I started playing lounge at receptions, occasionally hotels and restaurants - something I've more or less given up now.

I had a problem signing up because of the dreadful password demand. Still don't know how to contact the admin if I can't sign in. The site seems to lack the usual "contact us" or "contact the staff" buttons.

So, if I diappear it's because I can't sign in.
