Started this discussion. Last reply by James Richardson Aug 14. 11 Replies

I often write piano as a sketch and then add to it with strings and other instrumentation. Sometimes I leave the piano in as well.In this instance I'm not sure - I really like the emptiness of just…Continue

Really loving the round warm tone of felted pianos - plus some expressive string parts. All virtual instuments. What are your thoughts?…Continue

"Very cool.  A fun project too, I bet!  The music was very much star-wars-esque.  Loved it! "

"Well done Nigel! I'll bet your son really enjoyed himself making it. A great little father/son project. I have a few video editing programs but admit to not knowing much about the process. Would love to learn some of the techniques involved."

James Richardson replied to Nigel Campbell's discussion New Piano piece - Should I add strings?
"I really enjoyed this piece, and I think that it definitely works as a it is. I can certainly hear where strings could be added (perhaps some very ambient strings, or some very soft pizz or col legno, just for texture), but I think the simplicity of…"

Jan-Frederik Carl replied to Nigel Campbell's discussion New Piano piece - Should I add strings?
"Hello Nigel, you say it yourself: "I really like the emptiness of just the piano" - I think with strings, the piece would sound very different, most importantly, the emptiness would go away. There is probably no good or bad about this, it…"

"Thanks Michael, That was the toughest challenge - on the one hand you really want to underscore - but trying to write in that idiomatic John Williams style - it was much more melodic, but had to be simple in structure so as not to distract too much.…"

"Well that was a bit of fun! I was concentrating on the music which is great BTW, works with the visuals to enhance the mood. Most times when watching a film you hardly notice the music even though it is an integral part."

Nigel Campbell replied to Jon Corelis's discussion SoundCloud Mastering
"Truth is that all recording removes elements and reshapes the sound. Nothing is as good as our ears. Recording to tape introduces distortion and cuts and boosts frequencies. Old studio equipment does the same.  Recording is still a creative…"

"So full disclosure - I did study film making as part of my creative degree and I have directed and shot commercials when I worked in advertising. I don't really have time to commit to that (and what spare time I do have I'd rather be…"

Here's a bit of fun.My 10 year old son wanted to make a Star Wars themed movie during Lockdown. We filmed it on a phone in the garden and edited it added effects etc. He wanted to share it with all his friends on Youtube and I realised that if I just added Star Wars score it would get blocked for copyright. But he had set a date for release to his friends so we were on a deadline.I've scored independent films before but oddly this was the most challenging and interesting experiment. The film is…See More

H. S. Teoh replied to Nigel Campbell's discussion New Piano piece - Should I add strings?
"As others have already said, whether you should add string is a question that only you, the composer, can answer. As far as the current version stands, though, I think it would work well as background music or a soundtrack for a particularly…"
