Michael Tauben replied to Angus Davison's discussion Is there any point writing in the style of bygone eras?
"Sorry to be a stickler Michael but I think you are confusing sound waves with radio waves. Sound waves are not electromagnetic radiation but just waves of vibrating air molecules set in motion by vibrating objects. What we call sound is not possible…"

Martyn Standing replied to Michael Tauben's discussion Quicksand Fantasy for Piano- Bowie meets Beethoven ?
"I like this, especially the tonality from 1:08 onwards - it´s a nice little interlude right there. However, the introduction could maybe grab the attention a bit more, maybe varying the rhythm slightly? But that´s just personal taste -…"

Michael Tauben replied to Michael Tauben's discussion Quicksand Fantasy for Piano- Bowie meets Beethoven ?
"Thanks Michael, I did try to compress the mix but couldn't come up with a natural sounding setting that did the trick. I don't mind the dynamics that much though as it sounds quite realistic to me. Bowie was (still is) an original,…"

michael diemer replied to Michael Tauben's discussion Quicksand Fantasy for Piano- Bowie meets Beethoven ?
"Very impressive writing for the piano. I too thought the dynamics were a bit too dramatic. Re: David Bowie, yes, he was an incredible songwriter. I always considered him one of the true geniuses of that incredibly fruitful time (late 60's,…"

Quicksand Fantasy for Piano- Bowie meets Beethoven ?

I thought I'd share this little indulgence.Quicksand from the album Hunky Dory by David Bowie has long been a favourite of mine.Bowie is a remarkable songwriter and those early albums especially ( Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane) are full of great tunes. There is a depth of musical thinking in some of them which I find quite compelling.I used to doodle around on the piano with this song and thought sections of it were quite 'classical' in nature. It seems (to me) to have turned out a…See More

Michael Tauben replied to Angus Davison's discussion Is there any point writing in the style of bygone eras?
"Hi Angus, I assume that you're referring to art/concert music and not commercial or 'applied' music. You ask is there much point apart from personal enjoyment, but isn't that the whole point of writing any music? We may replace…"

Michael Tauben replied to Peter Linn's discussion Question about copyright

Michael Tauben replied to michael diemer's discussion Just Bought Vienna Strings Essential

Septet for Vienna Instruments Special Edition

Here's a short demo piece I wrote for a septet of FluteClarinetBassoonTromboneViolinViolaDouble BassI used the solo instruments from VSL Special Edition Vol 1.Sequenced in Logic.I think the legato violins could be better but the bassoon and clarinet are pretty convincing. The full instruments are obviously more versatile but the cut-down versions for the 'special edition' are a good starting point.See More

About Me (MUST be more than 10 words to be approved):
I'm a bit of an all rounder when it comes to writing. I like moving between genres and styles which has served me fairly well over the years. I think I have a sound grasp of the techniques of composers from antiquity to the present. I'm not a great fan of atonal music although I've written some. Earning a living means having to work in the commercial sector but I would love more opportunities to compose for large ensemble and for the concert hall.
