Perplexed embryonic intellect. I eat far too much peanut butter and I've grown increasingly suspicious that spontaneous symmetry breaking might be a metalogical fallacy.

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague".

Fractal Subject Tranformation - Ode to Earth

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 10:00pm 2 Comments

Alright here goes. Recently the question of "fractal" music arose on the forum here, and it incited me to revisit the topic.

Applying fractal concepts to music could be interpreted many ways, and with no precedent by which to proceed (my favorite conditions by which to work incidentally), I decided to work out this first piece, Ode to Earth, in accordance with my own musical interpretation of fractal structure.

Keep in mind, the "fractalization" was only carried…

I've seen in the past urban municipalities provide an interim "space" for taggers and perpetrators of graffiti in an effort to divert, provide a safety valve if you will, such from targeting more valuable private and public property with their nefarious activities. This blog is my equivalent device, a reservoir for the frivolous, irrational, flippant, comedic, and all manner of asshattery. Enjoy.

Bach, Bagels, and Bilateralism

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 4:30pm 12 Comments

The other day, while chewing my morning bagel and listening to some JS Bach, the Crab Canon, no less, my thoughts drifted from my toroidal breakfast morsel to the lemniscate of Bernoulli specifically and the concept of symmetries nested within symmetric isometries in general, and its ramifications within the discipline of counterpoint.

This was not a novel chain of association for me, as the thought has been crowding my mind with ever growing urgency and frequency for the last…

I've long used Fibonacci numbers to transform subjects, get more mileage out of them, or generate "cycles" from a single source idea. I've had some time to observe and reflect upon how these values behave when projected on the diatonic system.

Unfortunately rigorous proof of the assertions I'm about to make would require an explicit mathematical description of good part writing, eg, a… Continue

By the way, I meant to tell you this but forgot: My middle name is Peter (Pierre), and my grandmother's maiden name was Menard. Odd little coincidence.

Hi Kristofer, I just wanted to let you know that I checked out Borges on Wiki. He looks very interesting. my first impression of him was very favorable. I will look for his books. I'm just finishing a bio of Einstein, so I need to find a new read.

Kristofer - Glad you like it.  I will post a few more recent works too. I'd say that after writing Crossing The Straits and later a Quintet for piano and strings, my activity composing has been less.

As for Metamorphosis, I wrote this a few months after two deaths of close relatives in my family and I was quite familiar with a Marcel Dupre version of the chorale Prelude In Dulci Jubilio.  I also studied one of the Bach versions and then was listening to some Reich. Through the belnder of Dupre, Bach, and Reich I came up with this. The forces available were two pianos and percussion battery.  It was fun and I find many people like the piece. TO me it is a little out of character of what I usually write but not too much.

Kinda' like coppersmithing, the positioning and shape of every hammer mark is crucial or rather critical to the trained eye. I used to spend hours polishing the face of my hammer.

Hi Kris,

Sorry for the delay on getting back to you but the fact is, I'm seldom looking at my own page :D I couldn't stay away from the forum seeing as it's so active with scintillating conversation and comment. Yes! I'm the same liar that left.

and here I was, believing that traditional fugal and counterpoint works were not written anymore! how terribly wrong I was, and I'm glad for it. due to lack of time I can't listen through everything now, but those preludes and fugues (C major and F major) are and excellent sample of what's to come. Wish you the best, keep writting good music.

well congratulations on Gwendolyn! I know that finding time to write is a tricky deal what with the demands of "real life" throttling most creative impulses. But I also think that those few who are actually skilled in non verbal communication have a talent that needs cultivation. My writing too is on hold pretty much until after the holidays what with the Mac not working and a major work project looming that seems to eat hours. All I can say is keep writing.

My MAC died. Thats the gizmo I had used primarily to create the atmospheric disturbances that pass for my "music". I think Im done with MAC.. too quirky Saving up for an HP with 8GB memory 1 tb or hard drvie a cleverly designed beer brewing option. At that point Sibelius 6 is on the want list and so is DAW.. I might as well take the plunge. ..possibly Steinberg. Ive got a peice just asbout done but with out the computer working properly it remains balck dot on white paper. What are you working on these days?
