Liz Atems replied to Gerd Prengel's discussion Gustav Mahler - Completion of an amazing draft for a symphonic Scherzo
"I listened to both versions, and frankly, while the conductor's version is "slicker" and more late Romantic in the scoring, I actually prefer your version. Neither version sounds in the least like Mahler though, so I'm going to ask the question:…"

David replied to David's discussion Symphony no.18
"many thanks for your kind words Liz, which are especially meaningful as you have a strong knowledge of the relevant repertoire and it makes me think I must give Harvegal Brian another go as I didn't make so much headway the first time round (a good…"

Liz Atems replied to David's discussion Symphony no.18
"I've listened to this work several times now and think it is one of David's most immediately attractive and appealing works, and well worth the investment in time. There are big Romantic gestures and tunes in every one of the four movements, but it…"

I thought I'd just draw attention to my latest symphony as it's generally been well received to date in case there's anyone still here who reads this. No. 18 is among my longest but on the other hand is rather a departure from the somewhat…

Liz Atems replied to David's discussion Salu lament
"Hi David - I said it sounds "a little" like late Simpson, mainly in the spareness of the textures and of course, in the use of tonality in the way I described - making use of the tonal implications of the intervals but then moving in fresh and…"

David replied to David's discussion Salu lament
"I must say, I'm surprised that this particular work could have much resemblance to Simpson but I'm clearly missing something. As you may know, I'm a great admirer of his chamber music in particular and my quintet for clarinet, bass clarinet and…"

Liz Atems replied to David's discussion Salu lament
"David, this is wonderful work - I love the expressive writing for the voices and the strings. The long crescendo passage about 4/5 of the way through, and much of the rest of the work, sound a little like late Robert Simpson to me - and that's a…"

Liz Atems replied to Ollie King-Britton's discussion My First Symphony
"Lots of good things in here - first and foremost, your use of the orchestra which elicits a lot of timbral variety and clarity from an early romantic orchestra. I enjoyed especially the 3rd movement's central section and its interweaving of solo…"

David replied to Ollie King-Britton's discussion My First Symphony
"I'd probably agree that the first movement is the weakest -- something I'm often familiar with in my own pieces (the recent 18th symphony is, I think, a rare exception). I'm quite sure that with your next symphony, you'll be able to build on what…"

Ollie King-Britton replied to Ollie King-Britton's discussion My First Symphony
"Wow, thank you for listening to the whole thing with so much attention and providing detailed feedback. It means a lot!
I feel the first movement is by far the weakest, and definitely a learning curve for me. I feel I rushed through sections without…"

David replied to Ollie King-Britton's discussion My First Symphony
"nice to have some activity on this forum for a change -- I thought it was more or less dead, even if Rowy said it's only pining for the fiords. I had somewhat mixed feelings about this symphony. The opening was charming but I'm not quite sure what…"

Hi everyone, just sharing with you a composing milestone! My first Symphony, entitled 'Elysium' in 4 movements. It is musically diatonic, with an early-romantic style, loosely based on the glorification and romanticisation of war and a warriors'…

David replied to Gerd Prengel's discussion Gustav Mahler - Completion of an amazing draft for a symphonic Scherzo
"unfortunately I can't be of much help. Although I enjoy this music and it was interesting getting to know it, it doesn't sound Mahlerian (far more Beethovenian as others have said) and I can understand why no-one else has bothered to try and revive…"

Gerd Prengel replied to Gerd Prengel's discussion Gustav Mahler - Completion of an amazing draft for a symphonic Scherzo
"I need your help! A Korean Conducter wants to perform this Mahler Scherzo based on my completion, but he did a "revision" of it with the result, that I hardly recognise my work ! Would you please give me your assessment of both versions…"

  • Oh, and please welcome our new members, if you have a chance.
  • I've allowed a few new prospective members through. If you should observe signs of bother, abuse, or any other matter that arouses suspicion, please advise me promptly.. Thanks all.
  • Indeed, it has been solved. Thanks for the prompt response!
  • HS, I believe I've isolated the HTML issue mentioned, and I believe it's now resolved. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
  • Thanks HS. I'll investigate the matter.
  • Hmm, interesting. I just noticed that replies under the Discussion Forum do allow full HTML capabilities, but replies under Analysis & Critique don't. Maybe this is a section-specific setting that needs to be toggled?
  • It's been a while since somebody wrote something here. So I thought I'd bring up this request to allow links and attachments in comments, not just in posts. It would make it easier to have in-depth discussions without needing to create a new thread every time somebody wants to attach something to illustrate their ideas.
  • ok - that sounds like a good setting so will be interesting to see what the explanation (if any) is.
  • David, puzzling, because the site's settings at present bar members who aren't "friended" from sending private messages. I'll look into it.
  • As newest member Erica Woodward sent a message to at least one member wanting to urgently discuss something privately, it is to suspected that we have another spammer. If I remember correctly, on the old forum, prospective members had to submit a couple of sentences (which weren't posted publicly) explaining why they wanted to join the forum. I suspect spambots and others who are not serious about contributing would fall at this hurdle and I suggest something like this for possible consideration by the membership.
