David Lilly replied to Guy Shahar's discussion Invitation to "Intuitive Composers" (& resources coming soon)
"While I appreciate your perspective, I’m largely in agreement with Mike / Teoh here.
There may always be a theory versus non-theory debate, especially in today’s culture of instant gratification, an expectation of instant results- but I do believe…"

David Lilly replied to David's discussion The Little Mermaid
"Tonight was the night, and I finally had a chance to listen to your piece all the way through. To outline the process: I opened a beer, found a copy of the Hans Christian Andersen text, and loaded up the score. I read through the text first and was…"

David Lilly replied to Steven Linden's discussion Orchestral Suite in D
"I've had the pleasure of coming across several of your works, and each time it has been an enjoyable experience. This piece is no exception. The instrumentation and orchestration are thoughtful, and I can imagine how beautifully it would come to…"

David Lilly replied to Peter Rudenko's discussion Piano piece in "ratio 2:3" and "hyperblue" scales
"I really loved this, thanks for sharing. In my opinion, of the more abstract and obscure compositional mediums to work within, microtonality stands out as a promising way forward. It allows composers to explore the intricate nuances of pitch beyond…"

David Lilly replied to David Lilly's discussion What Autumn Wrote (For a 6-piece ensemble)
"Hey Teoh, thank you for the feedback! I'm glad you found the modern harmony with Baroque instrumentation unique enough. Your observation about the flute’s volume is noted, possibly correct- as I initially stated, I'm not confident the recording…"

David Lilly replied to HS Teoh's discussion Notation question: staccatos
"I agree with what you've suggested here already. Typically, the less cluttered you can make a score, the better—as long as you're not sacrificing clarity. A good example of this specific situation is the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 15th piano…"

David Lilly replied to David's discussion The Little Mermaid
"Excellent, congratulations on finishing this, David. An hour of non-stop music is quite an achievement.
As you might remember, I really enjoyed your Cinderella fairy tale. It was a lot of fun to read along with the text while your piece played. I…"

David Lilly replied to David Lilly's discussion What Autumn Wrote (For a 6-piece ensemble)
"Hi David / Rowy,
Thanks for having a listen.
I realize I should clarify a bit. The work is scored for winds and two harpsichordists, which gives it an “early music” impression. However, stylistically, the music doesn’t quite fit the baroque…"

David Lilly posted a discussion
Been a little quiet around here! I'll share my latest writing- There is nothing particularly ground breaking here, but I wanted to work on my ability to write for a small ensemble before tackling larger groups. The best way to describe this is an…

David Lilly replied to Gerd Prengel's discussion 'Fantasia Farewell' for Piano
"Hey Gerd, if we're throwing mock-ups around, I'd love to get in on the action! I never did finish the last one I started for you, and for that I apologize. However, I gave this short piece a go to make up for that. This is a dramatically different…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"Dang, someone beat me to it!
But I was thinking more along the lines of starting a 'band' that churns out very generic but catchy and effective songs, all while there really aren't any living, breathing members in the band or even writing the music.…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"Perhaps in classical or contemporary pieces the AI is incapable of drawing a convincing or interesting structure. But . . . what about pop / mainstream music?
Structure in that regard is a piece of cake. I just "made" a convincing satirical pop-punk…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"To make a long answer kind of short, though;
You're comparing mathematics to art. There is really no "right or wrong" answers when it comes to music that will satisfy a client. If they like the result, then it's a "right answer" versus something…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"Right- I don't think anyone is claiming the software has the ability to think for itself and produce anything that is authentically original. See the last paragraph of my thoughts. As mentioned, that will be the tipping point, if and when that day…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"The technology is incredibly impressive to me; especially the way it can convincingly set almost any text to listenable, melodic content- and the realism of the instrumentals and vocals is pretty convincing too. The most unsettling part is that it's…"

  • Hello David,

you had given me some very valuable feedback on a earlier orchestral work, particularly noting the absence of a cohesive theme. I have since decided to break the piece up into a full length symphony and in this context, I'd appreciate your comments about how the first movement sounds.
