David replied to David's discussion Symphony no.18
"good to hear from you again on the forum, Ollie and I'm very grateful for your kind and detailed analysis -- particularly the Willy Wonka comparison which was rather amusing. I suspect I would replace the despairing depth of Wagner with Bruckner --…"

David replied to Liz Atems's discussion String Quartet No. 1
"interesting that Tippett was such an influence. A friend when I was young was a huge fan and tried to convert me but I now remember little of his music as I haven't seriously investigated it in decades. Perhaps I'll go back at some point.

David replied to Liz Atems's discussion String Quartet No. 1
"this is a compelling work and one which continues to grow on each hearing. It is both serious of purpose and haunting at the same time. The musical language and gestures may have some hallmarks of Berg (or Tippet for that matter - I can't recall his…"

David replied to Gerd Prengel's discussion Gustav Mahler - Completion of an amazing draft for a symphonic Scherzo
"incidentally, your recording of the Park version is indeed an improvement (although that wasn't exactly hard)

David replied to Gerd Prengel's discussion Gustav Mahler - Completion of an amazing draft for a symphonic Scherzo
"I share some of Liz's scepticism as it seems strange that such a work could have been written around the time of the second symphony. If it was early then sure but by this time he had already developed his own inimitable style. If it is genuine then…"

David replied to David's discussion Symphony no.18
"many thanks for your kind words Liz, which are especially meaningful as you have a strong knowledge of the relevant repertoire and it makes me think I must give Harvegal Brian another go as I didn't make so much headway the first time round (a good…"

David posted a discussion
I thought I'd just draw attention to my latest symphony as it's generally been well received to date in case there's anyone still here who reads this. No. 18 is among my longest but on the other hand is rather a departure from the somewhat…

David replied to David's discussion Salu lament
"I must say, I'm surprised that this particular work could have much resemblance to Simpson but I'm clearly missing something. As you may know, I'm a great admirer of his chamber music in particular and my quintet for clarinet, bass clarinet and…"

David replied to Ollie King-Britton's discussion My First Symphony
"I'd probably agree that the first movement is the weakest -- something I'm often familiar with in my own pieces (the recent 18th symphony is, I think, a rare exception). I'm quite sure that with your next symphony, you'll be able to build on what…"

David replied to Ollie King-Britton's discussion My First Symphony
"nice to have some activity on this forum for a change -- I thought it was more or less dead, even if Rowy said it's only pining for the fiords. I had somewhat mixed feelings about this symphony. The opening was charming but I'm not quite sure what…"

David replied to Gerd Prengel's discussion Gustav Mahler - Completion of an amazing draft for a symphonic Scherzo
"unfortunately I can't be of much help. Although I enjoy this music and it was interesting getting to know it, it doesn't sound Mahlerian (far more Beethovenian as others have said) and I can understand why no-one else has bothered to try and revive…"

David replied to Ken Lindner's discussion A musical Cryptogram - Variations on KRLjr
"there's an infectious sense of fun which comes across very well I think here and the instrumentation sounds highly individual. My main issue is probably with the rendering which seems rather synthetic and perhaps lacking in the contrasts needed to…"

David replied to David's discussion Salu lament
"that's very kind of you, Guy -- this little piece seems to greatly split opinion. In my somewhat expressionistic mode, it's possible you might like something like the 2nd "Easter" string quintet if you like the Lament although there's nothing really…"

David replied to Robert Kennedy's discussion Why do I (you) like Baroque music?
"I almost never listen to Baroque music -- I like music to be emotionally direct and to the point without decoration and Baroque is the antithesis of that. Some of it I enjoy singing (such as Dixit Dominus or Zelenka's Missa Votiva), usually because…"

  • Hello David,

you had given me some very valuable feedback on a earlier orchestral work, particularly noting the absence of a cohesive theme. I have since decided to break the piece up into a full length symphony and in this context, I'd appreciate your comments about how the first movement sounds.

    Thanks!
