Having a good laugh

Recently, we discussed AI music generators. Today, there was an article in a so-called quality newspaper about new developments in AI. I wondered what all the fuss was about, so I had to try it. I had to dry my tears from laughing out loud and now I present to you:

The prompt: Write a prelude in the style of Bach's Little Preludes. By Stable Audio. I guess the player was the dog Rowlf from the Muppet Show.

  • I'm guessing they are using quite different methods to generate a "Bach Prelude". The link in the original post seems like it was generated using audio files of "Bach prelude"; the one Kristofer posted was probably generated using notation concepts (via MIDI or something else) and following a # of preset rules, including tonal counterpoint.

When ChatGPT first came out, I played around trying to get it to write music in XML, but the results were less than inspired. It was, however, quite open to my criticisms and willing to learn about the perils of parallel motion... :D

    • It is not generated by using audio files. I tried a different AI, one where you had to upload an audio file and the AI would do what you asked in the prompt. The result was slightly better, but still laughable.

Years ago there was a professor who succeeded in making chorales in the style of Bach and they were really good. But he didn't use AI, just good old voice leading and imitation captured in software. That inspired me to create software that stitches together chords in a progression using standard rules and voicing, because I was annoyed by the online progression generators that worked randomly:

  • It's as if they instructed it to compose the worst music possible...

    • I guess it is aimed at middle of the road instrumental music. You know, the stuff you hear in an elevator or a market. You don't need AI for that. Sony made software that did exactly that years ago, without any AI. I'm starting to think this whole AI thing is a hoax. Well, at least for music generation. I might even be able to come up with software that generates music myself. Although, to be honest, I don't make the software. I construct the data base and my best friend, a web developer, would write the software. I've made some apps in the past myself, but they were just silly games.
