It's getting busy here

Almost 30 members. it's getting busy here. I can't possibly remember all the names, let alone the things they stand for. Maybe I should put their photos on a whiteboard, like detectives do when they're trying to solve a crime. I will make notes like "intellectual, proceed with caution" or "music too good, probably stolen" and draw a line between the notes and the photos with a red marker. It's almost like Cluedo. Who is most likely to kill the forum?

    • your point of aiming to create works which last around 5 minutes is absolutely valid -- and another reason with my 22-53 min. symphonies why I don't hold out much chance of performance and don't specifically aim for that, while on the other hand mostly trying to ensure that works would be playable be "real" professional musicians if the opportunity arose -- assuming I then put in a bit of work preparing the score. There are composers around who specifically only write for virtual instruments which frees them up from any constraints regarding performability. I haven't gone that far -- yet.....

There are times when I feel like taking a boot to Dorico as well. But on the whole, I'd much rather have notation software to work with.

    • Not sure I agree, Jon. An innovation may lead to a (new) standard but only because it ceases to be an innovation. The huge variety of music composed over the past century doesn't seem to have yielded a standard except that still written in keys following certain rules. Chief among them is popular music, ultra-conservative because it aims at a fairly low artistic intelligence (if you'll excuse the phrase). Whetner people like it or not is a different question from whether they could assimilate it.

My music, surreal as it often is, isn't innovative but it isn't standard either. Well, I hope it isn't!

      .

    • Is your music posted anywhere?  You said it's often surreal -- I'm curious to hear what you mean by that.

    • Not here yet. I came from the now defunct version of CF, was known as Dane.

One of the problems on that site was accessing previous music submitted. Dane had been my "stage name" for a long time especially for piano engagements. Also the named composer of my scores. As those days now seem over I'm reverting to birth name - which isn't "Grove" which I used for various apprehensive reasons on joining this version of the site.

If the boss here can change it, I'll use the initials of my birth name.

I'll post a work soon enough but as it's modern and semi-tonal it won't get much comment or crit.

      .

    • Oh hi Dane, couldn't tell it was you 😆 Do post your stuff here; I've always liked your music's unique style.

    • I'm not sure about that -- if I remember correctly there were always a few people (sometimes myself included) who were willing to react to your masterpieces!

    • Yes, definitely post. My ears are fine with 12 note democracy.

    • except that for the benefit of us plebs, Dane tended to more often post 8 note autocratic works (with a few dissonances thrown in to spice things up of course)

    • But are they okay with 12 tone libertarian socialism?  That's the question.

  • More power to everyone.
