Elegy for Piano in a-minor

I am not sure whether I presented this little piano elegy which I wrote in the early summer in the former forum, so here it is:

It starts very melancholically, then a more vived middle part follows and in the end the music turns to a reconciling lovely A-Major ...

  • The opening melody sounds like a quotation of the opening theme of the last movement of Beethoven's sonata no.8 in C minor. :-)

I liked the tied notes across downbeats that give the music a syncopated, hesitating feel. Loved the excitement in the middle section, esp. the catchy rhythm in the LH. Overall, very nice work, thanks for sharing!
    • oh, regarding the begining of the Rondo of the Pathetique you may be right - I didn't thought this when I wrote it - but I gues I still can keep it as it is :-) Good observation regarding the "hesitating feel" - yes, thtat's what I had in mind ...

  • I get the first part, but I'm a bit puzzled by the colorful middle. It sounds cheerful, almost too cheerful for an elegy. Did your mother-in-law book a cruise? Or is it my flawed English again?

By the way, as I was looking for some material to upload, I coincidentally chose an elegy for a string quartet. Now it appears as though I'm mimicking you or attempting to demonstrate my take on the art of mourning, doesn't it? 😉
    • please let me hear YOUR elegy ;-)

    • It's on youtube, but with this wretched forum you'll never know.

The Elegy doesn't actually sound sad. It has a nostalgic tone, much like most of my other pieces. That's what people often say, because, to me, all my music is lyrical. But that might mean the same thing. I'm not very good with emotions. I usually entertain myself by adding something extra. In this case, it's the first violin. In a string quartet, the violins usually get to play all the best parts, so I only gave it a few notes to play. I let the cello have all the fun.
