Trio for clarinet, viola and piano

My wife was at a concert which featured a sonata for clarinet and viola and really liked the combination so I decided to try my hand at a trio including the piano. Compared to most works this year which have been often pretty doleful, this, although varied in mood, is in general more upbeat and ends with a vigorous rondo which is almost neoclassical in character. It also has a firmer tonal base to the extent one can say it's in F# minor. I put it on my Reelcrafter page for anyone who might want to try it out.

    • Hi Liz -- I know how busy you are so appreciate your taking time out to listen to this and am glad you seemed to enjoy it. As regards key, indeed the harmony as in virtually all my works of the past decade or so is very late romantic and frequently modulating which means that it doesn't spend too much time in the home key but it is there nonetheless.

Anyway, a Merry Christmas to you and here's hoping there might be a new work from you on the forum before too long!

    • Hi David,

Oh, I definitely enjoyed it. And a (belated) Merry Christmas to you and yours as well.

As for any new works from me, I wish that were possible, but our winter break this year is only a week and a half - I submitted final grades last Wednesday, and the new semester starts right after the New Year, and although classes don't start until the 8th, next week will be filled with department and committee meetings and prepping for classes. I am teaching the same (physics) course this term as I did in the Fall, where I learned that our US students are just not up to the level the course is traditionally taught at. I HATE dumbing material down, but I will likely not keep my job unless I do. The contrast between the international students and the domestic ones was very striking... and the domestic students are vastly in the majority. So, bottom line, I will probably be very busy until May.

But I'll try to drop by here from time to time and listen to a few new offerings.

      Happy New Year!
