Nocturne for violin and piano

A year or so ago, I happened to be looking at old MIDI files and discovered something which went under the cryptic title GIT_NOCT. I have no idea why. Anyway, this turned out to be one of the first things I ever wrote and I put the badly played MIDI file into Dorico to try and produce something with more current instruments and get it into some sort of shape (the rendering is by no means perfect). After listening to it, I wondered why I'd forgotten about it because I rather like it and so did a number of others who listened. It has the huge advantage of lasting a mere 7 mins. which by my standards is very short. Anyway, the piece is now more appropriately called "Nocturne for Violin and Piano" and can be found on my Reelcrafter site (second from top) https://play.reelcrafter.com/dko22/chamberworks. I also put it on my Music page here for quick access. It's obviously strongly influenced by my God, Janacek and has something in common with other earliest chamber works but is also rather a one off -- quite different from what I usually write nowadays.

  • Will check that link. Thank you for sharing.

  •  A pleasant work, David. In parts hypnotic, others vigorous, slightly abrasive. I particularly liked the stretch between about 3.55 and 4.50; and I thought the ending from about 6.28 was magical.

My single comment is I would have liked the violin to have more presence. Even when it raised its voice it seemed subordinate to the piano. Perhaps that was your intention in which case... fine.

    Most enjoyable.

    • Glad you enjoyed it, Ivor. When I first listened to this again after decades of neglect, exactly the section from 3'55" to around 4'50" was also the one I found the most striking and persuaded me it might be worth resurrecting. As for the violin having more presence, well I had also thought that recently when listening to it but now I'm not so sure  -- keeping a generally legato articulation throughout contrasts it with the piano and it probably largely what I originally envisaged. Having said that, I think there are one or two places where it could be more strident and I'll have another look at it.
