  • Excuse my orchestral ignorance, but is the score transposed?
    • yes, the clarinet and horn are clearly transposed.
      • Ah. I only asked because I was reading the first movement and we were starting in f.
        • Yeah, the horn and clarinet parts are written in F and B flat, respectively, but the piece also begins away from the tonic.
          • Yes I was initially confused and thought perhaps you'd intentionally or accidentally transposed the entire score. I've gotten further along in the reading (its quite a bit). Thanks for posting it.
  • I confess ignorance in wind quintet writing, but I did listen through and liked the scherzo / 2nd movement for its playful rhythms and surprise stops. Also liked the little fugue in mm.94-119 in the last movement.

The mixture of tertial and quartal harmony throughout was interesting... it took a while for my tertially-biased ears to acclimatize to it, but afterwards it was interesting to see how you employed both and meshed them together into a coherent piece of music. Very interesting. I should experiment more with quartal harmonies in my own work; that's still an unexplored area for me!

    Thanks for sharing.
    • Thanks for listening! Yes, exploring quartal harmonies within a tertian/tonal framework was my goal with this piece.
  • a lot of this is really quite nice. The first movement perhaps plods a bit until 2'55" when a more touching section is introduced so I'm glad I listened all the way through. All the others have plenty of interesting ideas -- perhaps the finale is the most original though in places I really like the third movement harmonies - some genuinely haunting stuff there

Just on the score, does Finale not default to concert pitch for the full score? Certainly in Dorico which I use, the transposition is normally only for the parts unless you specify otherwise, otherwise it makes the score rather hard to read.
    • Thanks very much! Yes, I always write in concert pitch, but I turn on transposition for the final score. (Though I should probably practice reading transposed parts).
