MOVEMENT STUDY (2020)

I've been mentioning in another discussion that I went through a period during the pandemic, writing what I called postcards, usually pieces that fit on a half a sheet of paper, then posting scrolling videos on Facebook. During that time, I was teaching a music rudiments class for dancers (ballet) and I was giving them graded movement assignments culminating in this one, which was designed to teach them to dance with an orchestra, counting the mixed meter rhythms of one of the parts (in this case, the trumpet). They were supposed to perform The Rite of Spring the following semester, but we were still in lockdown modality. It's only 35 seconds long, and employs the pitch material of my 2020 and 2021 postcards, which you will hear in String Quartet No 5 and Shadows of Innocence on my playlist. On the page it is longer than the postcards, but about the same audible length. I don't know what to do with it, since it is sort of a Stravinsky ripoff, although 12-tone-ish. I think of it as my Circus Polka, although it isn't a polka. It's more of a march. I would post one of my student videos, but I haven't asked permission from them, and it has her counting over the top of it. (She made one slight error in the counting, but the dancing is amazing.)

I have a bunch short miniatures like this that didn't make it into a larger piece. Another is Lockdown Hoedown, which is like 12-tone Steve Reich. Neither fits with anything else. Maybe I should just collect them as misfits.

Thoughts?
