Join local and international industry professionals at an open forum to discuss issues affecting film scoring - from finding work to understanding contracts, from union issues to licensing, from live scoring to soundtrack albums. Presented by the Film Musicians Secondary Markets Fund, you are encouraged to join us in an informal atmosphere offering real-world advice musicians can use. FREE ADMISSION
If you decided to attend, would you expect to:
a. hear war stories from session musicians about movie songs they'd played on?
b. listen to a panelist (songwriter/instrumentalist) talk about how she once had to shorten a song to fit in a friend's movie?
c. have the local chapter president of AFTRA (singers, voiceover actors) be a panelist?
Sadly, all of this and more happened at the Nashville Film Festival yesterday, and it took 20 minutes and comments from audience members to try and get the panel to actually address some filmmaker & composer concerns about how tone deaf the AFM/Musician's Union seems to have become. When a filmmaker lamented that he had AFM friends he really wanted to work with, but he only had a $50000 budget (total), the panel seemed to think he was just talking about his music budget. The moderator didn't allow him to clarify, so he left. And they cut the panel off 30 minutes early! Incredibly frustrating...

  • Indeed!
  • Got it - it's time for a revolution!!!
  • Hi Paul,

Yeah, my questions reflect the content of the meeting, which was disappointing, to say the least. And in a world where the sands are shifting oh-so-often, to go expecting to hear some substantive discussion about rates, relationships; etc, and instead being subjected to reminiscing about what may have been 'the good old days' was, quite frankly, an insult as well as a waste of time.
  • Interesting event - I don't quite understand your questions.... but I think they were wasting valuable time talking about not-so-important issues?
