'Recently purchased Finale & GPO4. I did not expect much, since most digital scores (that try to sound acoustic) are disappointments.

.....I went to venerable YouTube, and I heard a few passable to even decent orchestral scores. That means that there are all kinds of tricks to work out with the ARIA player. Each instrument voice has several controls, some of which I played with to get a recent string-centered piece to sound less irritating. They are meant to be manipulated.


.....GPO does warn you that you will need to use a modulation wheel, or its equivalent to achieve a good result. And that is a topic I am still in the dark on. I have not bought such a controller, to date. I plan to.


.....Still, there must be a sort of concensus by now, concerning optimal levels to set for, say a solo violin with keyswitching capacity in relation to a solo viola. Someone will say it's a matter of taste; but those of us who are not schooled in sound editing will not really understand that vague answer. I'm sure many of us would like to learn from successful experiments.


....So, who has a score they think sounds really nice, using GPO4/ARIA ? And what especial things did you do to enhance the basic "voices" that you used?

    I'm agree with you 100 % about the more endless possib. of EW Platinium. But reg. GPO it's a small & very fast using lib. for quick rendering in a Lap Top very useable and to show material for demos purposes.

    Which sounds for this usage ok I think.

  • Dear Oliver, As I said, I used Eastwest very basic, but the posibilities are very large. And it is in its extensive use it is superior. You take great care to your written score, and I imagine that you work hard for playback. Eastwest with your hands, I'm sure your results would be higher. Unfortunately, I do not have time to go further in the test, but I can, later, sent one of my compositions. What would interesant meanwhile, is to compare a solo instrument.

    I would have preferred a solo instrument, but Oliver has selected a piece for orchestra. So I did something quick. It takes a lot of work for models, and I had an hour to provide for this test. I did not use any instrument, and I did not change the indications for lunch Eastwest. The crescendos are not controlled. Each tool requires its logic. But it gives an idea.

    At this level, if we forget the work too fast on the record, I think the difference is not so obvious for Eastwest. The work of implementation, as Oliver says, is also very important. Eastwest but can go a hundred times farther than Garritan, for sure. But it takes a long time to prove it!

    The people at "Make Music" cannot stand the term, "mock up," in reference to GPO4.  It seems that meaning in language is difficult to convey without inflection, context, familiarity... perhaps a DAW is needed.


    My use of "trick up" was supposed to be funny, while asking for advice. I'll stop there.

  • Yes, I agree with Ray, after doing a lot of reading. To create the sound I heard on the Garritan Website, I think a DAW and several controllers [three possibilities] were used.




    That sounds pretty good for a $149 program. It's obviously "tricked up" - which means, great time and expertise went into making the clips sound this good.


    I went to the Make Music Forum and asked a similar question. I was lambasted heavily! GPO4 users are very happy with their work.


    This is a very subjective art... it is not the difference between a Steinway and  Fazioli.


    There is much that can be done, with the tools at hand. Those that posted examples: thanks. It turns out that the Internet is replete with tutorials and tips. So it's going to be all right.
