EQ'ing a Kick Drum?

A difficult mixing task is the problem of separating the frequencies of a kick drum from the frequency range of the electric bass. I've been placing the kick drum lower than the elec bass in the frequency spectrum. Using drum replacement software (in Sonar) has allowed me to transfer the audio kick track, to a MIDI track, which I then use to trigger a sample. I've been using  a kick drum sample in my D4 sound module. It has very strong low frequencies, around 43 hz. It's so low that it affects you at a gut level. On the downside it lacks definition. Tonight I combined that sample with just the higher frequencies of another drum sample from Sonar's Session Drummer 3. I tweaked this kick sample by removing frequencies below about 500 hz and also above about 2k hz. So now the kick track has the very low thud of one sample, combined with the relatively high frequencies (beater click) of the other sample. I actually keep the two samples on two different tracks so I can have flexibility in blending them together. I'm hoping this scenario will allow a lot of room for my elec bass tracks which typically lack sharp (treble) definition.
