Building studio false walls | |
Like many of you, I have a lot of instruments in my studio, and I love having them close by and ready to be played or recorded. But it really does create a lot of clutter, so I decided to build a couple of walls in two of the corners of my studio. The walls would serve multiple purposes: A - they will be cloth covered and reduce some of the high frequency reflections. 2 - they will allow for storage behind them and open up for access III - they will increase the coolness factor of the look of the studio by covering up square corners. | |

| You can see the MondoTraps in the corners and the guitars on the wall. | Not bad looking, but I can't store all my mic stands and other instruments there. |

3D Design

| It's pretty amazing what you can do with stock 3D software. Not only did I put in the guitars, but also you can see my keyboard, speakers and Mackie control unit. The hardwood floors would really be nice, too. | |

| As you can see here, I actually created every piece of wood for the walls in the software. That way, I knew exactly what to buy and how to make it, if it would work and so on... | |
It is all 2 x 4's and 1 by 2's. | |
Building the Walls
| Since I knew the exact dimensions for the wood I needed, and I planned it using standard precut wood sizes, and I allowed for a little wiggle room, I just went to the hardware store with a list and walked out with the wood, precut and ready to go - for about $60 a wall. | |

| I had to paint the black parts first and let them dry. | |

| Then I laid out the parts and used wood screws to attach everything. The inner part of the wall is a door that is designed to be about 1/2 an inch smaller than the opening, to allow for the fabric covering. There are three hinges holding eachdoor and a handle built in into the door. | |

| You can see the handle assembly piece here. I had to drill hole insets for the supplied handle bolts to reach. | |
The Final Product

| The walls look great. They hide stuff behind them, lots of percussion, other instruments, guitars, mic stands and so on. | |

| It's important to note that the walls are covered in fabric and not solid so as not to create a lot of bass build up. | |

| They are only standing in place and only held there by a few cables bolted to the wall. It's pretty easy to do! | |
