Dave Dexter replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"Music libraries, and media using them, goes back some time. It's not a modern facet of the industry at all, and the difference is still that a human created those pieces. You can play devil's advocate along the lines of "modern composers regurgitate…"

HS Teoh replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"Yes, that's what I'm trying to get at.  Like it or not (and personally I don't like it, but it's the harsh reality) the AI hype is going in the direction of replacing low-effort music productions.  How far it is along that line of development I…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
""If a client is satisfied with the kind of mindless regurgitation of training data that current AI produces, I'm glad they aren't my clients."
Well, just to poke the bear a little then -

How is that much worse than a producer, music supervisor,…"

HS Teoh replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"The point is not about right or wrong answers to math problems. That was only an illustration to show that current generative AI is incapable of reasoning.  It's pretty good at aping the process of reasoning, but if you look at it deep enough,…"

Dave Dexter replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"It being low effort to you isn't really the point. The most banal filler score to a third-tier TV series has still been composed by someone, possibly even orchestrated and recorded rather than just using samples. Sure, I could shit out that stuff…"

Dave Dexter replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"Clients can like and approve whatever shitty music they please. That's right. If the music has been trained on that of other unwitting or unwilling composers, and especially if it's not a composer getting the job but some prompt enthusiast, I'd say…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"To make a long answer kind of short, though;
You're comparing mathematics to art. There is really no "right or wrong" answers when it comes to music that will satisfy a client. If they like the result, then it's a "right answer" versus something…"

HS Teoh replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"In the meantime, it seems that it's gradually coming up to the point where it could replace a lot of cookie-cutter work: the kind of musical filler that like bad romance novels simply recycle the same worn out plots, changing really only the names…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"Right- I don't think anyone is claiming the software has the ability to think for itself and produce anything that is authentically original. See the last paragraph of my thoughts. As mentioned, that will be the tipping point, if and when that day…"

Sharat Chandrasekhar commented on Sharat Chandrasekhar's blog post Please critique the First Movement of my Symphony in D major
"Thanks, David.  Definitely appreciate the feedback. The passage that starts at 4:15 does have a climax at 4:23 which does fizzle out, because I didn't want a sustained one after the introduction. I wanted to save that for later.
I thought I had some…"

Rowy replied to Ivor's discussion Is a score submission appreciated or even necessary
"I keep it simple. I write what I can play and ensure it's within reach for the average musician too. Once the composition is done, I create the score. Nowadays, since players often need to hear the music first, I also provide a sound file. That's…"

David commented on Sharat Chandrasekhar's blog post Please critique the First Movement of my Symphony in D major
"the opening, I thought was quite impressive. You build up the attractive Brucknerian theme quite nicely initially and then the second part from around 4'15" initially looks as if it's going to build up to a powerful climax but then it just fades…"

HS Teoh replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"I remain an AI skeptic.
The technology isn't new; it has been around for decades now. The difference really is in (1) the scale of data available to train the model, thanks to the internet and social media harvesting millions of data points from…"

David Lilly replied to John Driscoll's discussion Udio AI - Short Opera Scene in the Style of Richard Strauss
"The technology is incredibly impressive to me; especially the way it can convincingly set almost any text to listenable, melodic content- and the realism of the instrumentals and vocals is pretty convincing too. The most unsettling part is that it's…"

  • Indeed, it has been solved. Thanks for the prompt response!
  • HS, I believe I've isolated the HTML issue mentioned, and I believe it's now resolved. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
  • Thanks HS. I'll investigate the matter.
  • Hmm, interesting. I just noticed that replies under the Discussion Forum do allow full HTML capabilities, but replies under Analysis & Critique don't. Maybe this is a section-specific setting that needs to be toggled?
  • It's been a while since somebody wrote something here. So I thought I'd bring up this request to allow links and attachments in comments, not just in posts. It would make it easier to have in-depth discussions without needing to create a new thread every time somebody wants to attach something to illustrate their ideas.
  • ok - that sounds like a good setting so will be interesting to see what the explanation (if any) is.
  • David, puzzling, because the site's settings at present bar members who aren't "friended" from sending private messages. I'll look into it.
  • As newest member Erica Woodward sent a message to at least one member wanting to urgently discuss something privately, it is to suspected that we have another spammer. If I remember correctly, on the old forum, prospective members had to submit a couple of sentences (which weren't posted publicly) explaining why they wanted to join the forum. I suspect spambots and others who are not serious about contributing would fall at this hurdle and I suggest something like this for possible consideration by the membership.
  • It seems the consensus was reaching a crescendo, so I had to dust off the Gold Codes:)
  • Anyone else having issues posting links/embeds in replies? I can't for the life of me get them to work in responding to Rowy's Halloween thread... I just get an error message each time. Seems to work ok posting a new thread?
