"Hey Robert,
Got a chance to hear your S2M1 piece.  Even over one inch speakers it is a good listen.  Particularly like the rhythm figures and spirited instrument combinations.  Looking forward to run the list as I can during the rest of the week.…"

"Robert,
I'm having trouble getting your songs to play.  It's probably this very old MAC.  When I find the trouble, I'd like to hear your work.

"Hello Jeni

These are good musical ideas. I offer two things that you may like to try to see immediate change:  One, each piece is rendered at the same level, that is, the same volume and touch.  A good teacher told this to me this way -  Music has…"

Thanks for taking time to reply. I read long article on Virtual Instruments forum about setting the master fader to 0dB/ recording sample MIDI tracks at a low volume (middle green area) to hear the details better, then balance the…"

Chris Merritt replied to tony hartmann's discussion Cubase - VSL -MIDI-and dB benchmarks
"Hi Tony!

Some pointers - the 'Velocity' of the midi notes is different from the volume level, but often related. Some sounds may not change volume with velocity at all, but just get brighter sounding. So use velocity to get the proper performance,…"

  • Mr. Hartmann, I really enjoyed your "Appalachia Suite". It reminded me of the great english composer John Ireland, but with your own joyful american "appalachian style", different than Copland. From your music, I understand your spirit and wish you well.

  • Your "Blue Ridge Sunrise" is a wonderful work. Bravo!

    All the best.

  • Thanks Tony. Let me know whether or not you were able to play them. All are MP3, but the latest one I had to compress more to get it under 20MB.

I also started to listen to your music while at work, and I like it. I'm going to wait 'til I get home to hear on better speakers.

  • Thanks for your kind words, Tony.
    Best wishes from Los Angeles,

  • Hi Tony: Thanks for listening and for your kind comments. Perhaps you can help me on a related matter. Several people have been nice enough to post comments on this piece and I have received emails letting me know that comments have been posted but yours is the first I've been able to actually see on my page. I'm a newcomer to this forum as you know so I must be doing something wrong but I can't figure out what it is. Can you pointme in the right direction?

    Thanks again

  • Hello Tony ! Wasn't sure what to expect when I signed up today on this forum today. I use Sibelius (ver 6) for my notation software and have Logic Pro for when I want to produce something more precisely engineered, or am working with a film clip. The latter is rare but I have had a couple opportunities to help a friend as he scored a short film. I also love Logic for its incredible software synthesizers and their potential for use in live performance. Not only for myself, but my wife too, who is a fine jazz pianist. As far as "computer music", when I did my CS masters at Yale in the '90s I was working with a team involved in functional programming and created an interface to do rudimentary music composition using Haskell as the front end: and the interface was driving the digital signal processor in a NeXT workstation via a Common Lisp music package called "Common Music." But despite my CS and math background, I'm not really interested in "computer music" per se: if one calls "computer music" using algorithms to assist in the creation of the composition.

Having the computer background DOES come in handy just keeping all these damn drivers, peripherals, ports, wires, etc all straight so what I do have in my studio works right. A challenge enough as it is ;-)

    Stay in touch ! Greg
  • Hi Tony, many thanks for your kind words. In fact the film/tv thing is a new exploration for me. Previously, I only composed for the concert hall (and a couple of theatre-based projects) - choral stuffs; orchestral works; some concerti; chamber ensemble things; solo instrumental doo-daahs. I guess I should find a way to incorporate some of that music in to my profile.

    Thanks again
