"Ron:
It's good to hear from you. I have been so busy writing for various groups that I don't get to "play" with you guys. I am still hoping to learn enough about Cubase that I can start posting again.
Thanks for the kind words and I shall indeed…"

This looks and sounds quite professional, however due to my age and training, it is not a genre' that I am into. Thanks for the invite but I fail to see that we would have any mutual interests, so please accept my "no thanks."

"Where do I start? You guys killed Lovers and Cascavelo. I'm embarrassed that I didn't think to let a drum solo come FIRST on Cascavelo--loved it. Great soloists but the piano was a little too busy for my tastes. Who is playing guitar, Tom Wolfe,…"

"I certainly do want a copy of "hello Young Lovers."
As to me doing a "suite," I'll have to ponder that a bit because as you already know, I have never in my life had an original thought and I do not enjoy composing.
A group of arrangements or one…"

"I like what I hear. I'm still a fan of melody and harmony, in time with some formal construction.Do I hear some Celtic influence in your writing or have I just been married too long to a woman with Scottish heritage on both sides of her family?

  • Steve! A personal welcome! We are honored to have you here. Your music is scrumtrulescent.

  • Hey - I just got Chris hooked up on this thing. I'll forward it to a few of the other folks that we share the air with. Take all the time you want with the megachart - if we can't do it this year - there is always the next concert. I'll find "Hello Young Lovers" get it to you ASAP.
  • Hey Steve, So - I've been thinking about this for a while. Would you like to do a project for UTC? I frequently use WW's/Synths/Horns and such with my Jazz Ens. - Last year we did a concert of complete originial music. Mace Hibbard, Jimmy Bowland, Chris Gordon, Chad Fisher and Myself all did original tunes for the concert. Could I hire you to do write a "suite" or something like that for the Jazz Ens. for our spring concert in April? Totally original or arrangements if you'd like - completely up to you. It would be great to have a Steve Sample Signature tune in our library.

I do have a live version of "Hello Young Lovers" that we did here at Bama, that is pretty scary if you'd like a copy.

Hey Bob - If you hate the Talented old guys - you should hear the talented young guys that are cut from his cloth!

Steve - Great to see you and have a way to keep in touch frequently. I sent this link to Chris too.
  • I hate talented old guys! (Just a twist on what you told Kyle Robertson). :-)

Steve, I enjoyed listening to your music, especially the big band tracks. Glad to meet you here!
  • haha thank you Steve! I really enjoy your music. I'd love to get into some big band writing sometime. Your computer orchestrations are great as well.

    All the best,
    Kyle
  • Fantastic music there Steve. I really love Parade of the Wooden Soldiers!
  • Steve, thanks for the wonderful comments!

The name Semple (and possibly Sample and Semphill and other similar names) originates from Renfrewshire in Scotland. There was a castle which is no more but there is still a lake there called Loch Castle Semple. Before that I think we traced the name back to Saint Paul and to a group of Hugenots who fled France to work as mercenaries in Scotland against the accursed English!!! (Only joking btw, I am English.)

I'm afraid I can't compete with 6'4" being only 5'11" myself but I'd be interested to see pics of your relatives. It would be nice to have stunt doubles!

Hopefully I'll get a chance to listen to your music tonight.

    regards

    James
  • Steve,

Yes you do hear celtic influence, which is ironic considering I'm a 3rd generation Ukranian from the "old country". But I like and incorporate many musical styles, so it's no mistake that I chose on certain cues to use that style. By the way I'm listening to your material as I'm writing this. Your stuff is great!
  • Dr. Sample,

Yes, I knew Dr. Hinton. He was a great guy. He was the first professor I met at AUburn. He was so kind to me. He was one of the main reasons I started out at Auburn. He passed away several years ago didn't he?

I am about to head to Birmingham. It is heating up to 94 degrees today! My wife is going to a workshop today while I have to go somewhere and pass the time. I bet I find an air conditioner somewhere.

    I love your arrangements. EXCELLENT!!
