Spencer Doidge replied to Mohammad W.Alsaad's discussion (Agony Of Delight) - Epic Orchestral Attempt
"Mixing and mastering isn't a strength of mine other than to comment that I was able to hear what was going on under the melody reasonably well. What caught my ear was right near the end, the strings.
On composition and originality, I like contrast,…"

Spencer Doidge replied to Rodney Carlyle Money's discussion "Hymn" from the Requiem "In Remembrance"
"Perfect just like it is for a big open acoustically live space and a solemn occasion. You kept it simple. That's what you want here. You have a general audience who wants to think about the person, the occasion, and the ambience while the music…"

Julie Harris commented on Spencer Doidge's blog post What makes for a successful piece of music?
"I think the key word in Spencer's premise is "successful", which of course will have as many different meanings as there are composers!   To me, a piece is successful if I enjoyed writing it, I'm not embarrassed by it years later, and performers I…"

Gavin Brown commented on Spencer Doidge's blog post What makes for a successful piece of music?
"My customer is the audience. Being thought well of by musicians and composers is nice too, but not as important to me."

This is very good.  The interplay between all four voices is wonderful, especially at B, when you finally bring the quartet together en masse.

The only thing I noticed in the score was the use of a few enharmonics; ie m45, should that F# be a Gb?…"

Julie Harris replied to Spencer Doidge's discussion First post and first attempt at string quartet
"Hey Spencer!
I enjoyed this piece ... it just stopped playing before it got to the end, so I didn't get to hear how you wrapped it up, but what I heard I really liked.  I coach and conduct a lot of chamber groups, and program a lot of new music, and…"

  • Hi, Spencer, thank you for being my friend. ;o) I'm basically a newbie here, too, as I signed up a couple of years ago, but only recently got active.

You asked where to find my music... I have a couple of videos on my page. If you click on my picture, that will take you there. Then scroll down the page past the comments and profile info to come to the two videos. Beyond that, I think I've only posted one thing in Music Dissection (can also be found on my page on the left side where it shows Discussions I've started). It's a flute duet (which I have since rewritten) turned String Quartet. The fanfare Julie mentioned is in one of her discussions, where she announced a competition for an upcoming concert.

I really enjoyed your string quartet, and look forward to hearing more of your music!
