About Me (Must include at least one paragraph of biographical information about you as a composer) - blank or minimal answers on this line will cause your request to be rejected. Include a link to your website if you have one.

Experimental musician, gender wayang player, violin/fiddle player, composer. I run a Balinese gender wayang group in London called Segara Madu (Sea of Honey). This is a quartet of metallophones played for the Balinese shadow play as well as ceremonies. I studied this complex and beautiful music with the late I Wayan Loceng of Sukawati in Bali from 1987 onwards. I lecture in ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. I also play blues/modal/psychedelic fiddle and compose with Oxford-based rock group Spiral 25. This relates to my ongoing interest in improvisation and fusion forms. We've recently been experimenting with gender wayang/psychedelic rock fusions! I also compose music for violin, voice and various combinations of instruments in contemporary experimental style. Particular influences have been John Luther Adams, Morton Feldman, Terry Riley and Gavin Bryars but also just about anything and everything from Machaut to Radiohead.

  • Unfortunately there was no time to talk to you on Saturday. Instead I had a listen to your music on myspace. I really enjoyed and will have more listenings in future. You should post your music here too. Thank you! Rudi
