"I liked Ostinato Trip, but I agree with Phil's comments that maybe a transition to another key or a spacier section would break it up a little. This is not saying that the piece is boring! I liked it. I really liked the section transition around…"

"Doug,

Thanks for commenting.  The consensus so far seems to be that my work is a little too old fashioned--maybe some think it is contrived.  I can understand that.  I have quite a bit of other material that is much more modern and unique and that…"

"Ansgar,

Sorry I didn't reply sooner.  I appreciate your comments, and I think I agree with your statements to some extent.  Are you saying that if I learn English, I should not try to speak to people using the vocabulary and syntax of Shakespeare,…"

"Is there nothing worthwhile or enjoyable in my posted compositions because they are written in a style you think is outdated or unsuitable to your tastes?  Anyone can interact with any music--whether they like it or not depends on a mystery none of…"

Thank you for listening and for being honest.  Just for clarification, are you saying that my music is contrived? "

"Michael,

Great stuff!  I especially liked Ambient SOL.  There are some great layers of sound, and the percussive elements make it captivating.  I enjoyed listening!
Forgive my simple question, but what did you use to record and mix the various…"

  • Thanks Joshua. I'll consider that for future compositions, and glad you enjoyed it!
  • Hey thanks Joshua. I don't have much music to post- I'm in the middle of putting an album together of my compositions. It'll probably take me all year. I'll post them as they are completed. Thanks for listening. I'll check out your symphonies now.

...OK. Your first movement is interesting. I found myself wanting to hear more surprises and more contrasts. You have played rock and jazz. Why not allow your orchestral music to reflect that? What sample libraries are you using? GPO? My advice to you- allow your music to reflect the influences of the 20th century. I agree with Ray- a DAW and other sample libraries will help too.

  • Welcome to the forum! I'll listen to your symphonies, when I get home...
  • At first - sorry, but I´m not able good to speak and write in English but I try to do it. I know that it is allways a problem as other people criticize own compositions, because it´s a part of our soul, it´s like own children. What I want to say is: feel free from this what your hear from other composers - try not to invite new the language but find an own individual way to say something with own words. And this can be in a way of tonality but so as we don´t use the language of Byron or Goethe we should´nt use the style = the syntax of composers of the 19 cent. I don´t think that any music is timeless! Music of Beethoven is different from music of Dufay and Messiaen, the circumstances of their becoming are important for form, function, sound, instrumentation and so on. So I think we should focus our forces on development of sounds for the people in a contemporary situation.
  • I´m not able to rate this, but it is not real contemporary neither in sound nor in "audible idea" - question: to which listeners interacts this music? Ansgar
  • Dear Joshua, why do you try to develop your composition skills in a historic style? It can never achieve a result what you self satisfies, because the music of the Beethovens, Mendelssohns &&& is in any case better then style copies-- listen to the world of today -- Ansgar
