Jonathan Metz replied to Henri Vartio's discussion How to build "non tonal" harmonies?
"Someone said it above, but in a similar way an approach I use is keeping the intervals and/or sonorities uniform in some way, but it really depends on what I want to communicate. My approach changes every time. A fun thing to try that my composition…"

Jonathan Metz replied to Andrew Gleibman's discussion What are music genres today?
"As a composer, I been thinking lately of Genre in the same way I think about pitch, rhythm, timbre and other musical elements etc.--it's just another tool to use to create something outside a genre, or something inside a genre. You're the composer,…"

Jonathan Metz commented on Doug Lauber's blog post Please- No Story Behind the Music!!
"I think that, like everything else in a piece of music, the ultimate decision should be up to the composer. Usually I agree--that a story behind the music can be a distraction from the listener's experience. There are sometimes situations though…"

Jonathan Metz replied to Lori Sweeney's discussion A Fugue or not a Fugue?
"In the end, I think that the fact that you like your composition is what it ultimately comes down to. It is very enjoyable and I congratulate you.

Jonathan Metz replied to Kirk Williams's discussion New Member - Looking for feedback
"Very energizing. I agree that there could be more going on at the climactic moments, adding another part in there maybe? Also, perhaps suddenly cutting the percussion for a brief second before a climactic moment would really intensify the surprise.…"

Jonathan Metz replied to Lori Sweeney's discussion A Fugue or not a Fugue?
"You are exactly right. A fugue is really more of a process than a form. A fugue is about what happens to the musical material, not how it is laid out in structure. Though because inevitably structure is married to process you do end up with…"

Jonathan Metz replied to Beth Patterson's discussion Feeling like you've heard this somewhere before...
"I had the privilege once of hearing the personal testimony of a composition professor at the University of Michigan about his encounter with George Crumb--a very famous post-avant garde composer (famous for "Macrocosmos" and "Black Angels"), and…"

Jonathan Metz replied to Minseo Park's discussion Doraji Fugue - A Fugue based on a Korean Traditional Theme
"Fantastic! Very enjoyable and intriguing. I love the fusion of genre: traditional German form meets Korean folk tradition. Marvelous! And you execute it in a beautiful manner. The piece has a way of really bringing me in. I would echo the comment…"

Jonathan Metz replied to Lori Sweeney's discussion A Fugue or not a Fugue?
"Well Lori, it looks like you have received mixed opinions about whether or not it is a Fugue! I've put in my two cents... I personally do think it's a fugue and I still hold to my argument above... but as you have mentioned, it's been almost two…"

Jonathan Metz replied to Lori Sweeney's discussion A Fugue or not a Fugue?
"I would have to disagree with both Josef and Michael. I do believe it is a fugue, it does not matter whether it is polyphonic or not. One can state a theme and then state that theme in another voice without continuing a polyphonic texture in the…"

"Yeah, I've seriously been considering switching to Mac. I hear Macs are better for what composers do in the first place, but I'm torn because I prefer the windows operating system. Maybe you could give Wondows 7 a try, I hear it's good."

"Hey nice Fugue. I like it's energy. I am reminded of Holst when listening to it. I like how throughout you keep the prominent rhythmic motif going, but keep the harmonic movement interesting!"

  • Thanks so much! I appreciate the thoughtful feedback.

I finally dredged up my backlog of fugues I have on the other (older) computer. So, I will (probably tomorrow) upload another.

The older computer is XP ... my newer computer is Vista ... seems a bunch of things work with one, but not the other .. including my older sequencing software ....

duh, ... my favorite oxymoron: "MICROSOFT WORKS"
  • Yeah, the audio on your fugue is plays on my computer.
