Tim Marko replied to John A. Ryther's discussion To the Fallen
"John,

I like the openess of the voicings.  There is a very "airy" feel to the harmonies.

My only concern in an actual performance would be that occasionally, you have the solo voice playing in the upper registers while supporting voices are…"

Sylvester Wager replied to John A. Ryther's discussion New Choral work
"Since the audio is not kind to your work, it was helpful to see the score.
On paper, it looks nice. Near the end, basses are not going to like F to G-flat: enharmonic writing will help intonation. I am sure you know this, already.
The words and…"

John A. Ryther commented on Nick Capocci's blog post Neither Schoenberg nor Hindemith really understood atonality. Did they?
"While it is not entirely obvious when you first hear Schoenburg (haha) the music of the later period exibits a desire to avoid any sense of a key center at all, while Hindemith actually depends on key centers to bring his music to some form that…"

John A. Ryther replied to Chen Qi Hang's discussion Request of urgent help with Finale 2011 + Garritan Personal Orchestra
"Chen,
Yes, I am familiar with your problem.  Really, the only way this will for playback would be to put the pizz. in another layer and play it back using midi.  Unfortunately, I do not know how to make the darn thing work during VST playback."

John A. Ryther replied to John A. Ryther's discussion Work for 12 Horns
"Sir,
Thank you for your response.  I did intentionally write the symetry into the work.  The other movements are less ridged in their forms.  I think I will want to make this movement the middle one.  Thank you again.

Jong Kim replied to John A. Ryther's discussion Work for 12 Horns
"What a neat sound! I very much like the long chords with crescendos, especially here interspersed among the more restless parts. I think this would sound quite awesome in performance! The ABA form is simple but effective, I think more so since I…"

Thank you for youre response, I appreciate it.  And you are right about making people feel.  Even in my more dissonant work I try to evoke that.  Thank you.

John A. Ryther replied to William Randal Bowers's discussion Young College Composer looking for feedback on latest piece.
"William,
Nice, but I would avoid the dominant 7th chords.  Clear it up a bit by opening up the voicings and change the harmonic structure (slightly) but not enough to change the static fell of the piece."

John A. Ryther replied to William Randal Bowers's discussion Young College Composer looking for feedback on latest piece.
"I would echo what Mr. Vario has said. There is a real tendency. when using the full orchestration, to have too much density in the harmony.  It is almost as if there is noshift between  consonant and dominant harmonies. Try lightening up the…"
