I think one of my movements was over 7MB - so this 7 MB - has this come in only recently.
Would appreciate any…"

  • Hi James

See that you haven't been active on Composers Forum but hoped you might see this message.

So few SA composers on site.

  • Thanks for your comments Dennis.  No greater commentary can be given to a composer than his work "struck me quite deeply".  This is, one would hope, the intention.

I'll be honest, and hope I dont disappoint you Dennis but I am not sure how the work came together.  It took me 3 years to finish (i had 18 months off in the middle practicing piano).  Regarding the Cadenzas, when I hear it now I am still quite surprised mysef how i did it.  So I cannot offer advice on structuring Cadenzas other than to say, if I have a solid harmonic vein going through the music, then the cadenza just seems to happen.

I can say that I love how Rachmininoff plays melody (and harmony) "between" the notes.  He seems to thread the needle and goes even deeper when the harmony already is quite complete

  • Hi James,

Just listened to your Symphony No. 1 First movement, and really enjoyed your opening theme in cellos; your overall orchestration was very skillful, and well integrated.  I thought it was interesting how it slowed towards the end, which created a sense of grandeur to my mind.
