Marc Descôteaux replied to Gerald (J.D.) Tolman's discussion New orchestral/film type work - Triumphico, Movement 2
"Very nice flow and timely instrumention that is unveiling the mood - in that respect I do see continuing with woodwinds like you mention after the lyrical trumpet, it would sustain the mood buildup until the climax. I was looking to hear for a theme…"

Gerald (J.D.) Tolman replied to Gerald (J.D.) Tolman's discussion New orchestral/film type work - Triumphico, Movement 2
"Thanks for the kind words Adrian. A lot of my pieces are fairly short... I'm just not very good at developing a theme into new things, so when I think I've bored the listener with enough repetition of the theme disguised with different orchestration…"

Gerald (J.D.) Tolman replied to Adrian Allan's discussion My new piece - nonet
"Adrian,

I took a listen to your Nonet, actually several listens. I didn't know anything about your instrumentation on the first listen, and kept thinking.. whatever sample he's using here sure sounds like a tuba, but surely it can't be! Well,…"

Adrian Allan replied to Gerald (J.D.) Tolman's discussion New orchestral/film type work - Triumphico, Movement 2
"Some very nice counterpoint in the woodwinds that perfectly set up the entrance for the strings. I think you have a very good melodic and harmonic progression here. The brass too enters very naturally.

I think that the B chord to break the A minor…"

Tyler Hughes replied to Gerald (J.D.) Tolman's discussion Dream Suite for Wind Ensemble
"I really liked this piece. Everything musically worked for me very well. Loved the harmonic language and use of percussion.

Gerald (J.D.) Tolman replied to Gerald (J.D.) Tolman's discussion Dream Suite for Wind Ensemble
"Thank you again for directing me to this group!

I've uploaded the PDF file now, it's a bit messy, especially with the realized percussion staves at the bottom that aren't in proper percussoin notation, and there's a few hyperscribe sessions that…"

Had a listen to your piece. You know it's always good to provide a PDF of the sheet music too, and to tell us what virtual…"

  • Greetings Gerald,

I like your music very much. It sounds professionally recorded and realistic. Thanks for sharing.

    Very best,

    Larry Elliott

  • Thanks so much for your detailed comments on my piece. I literally had to go on holiday for a week just after you posted the critique so I had to dash out of the door. It's great to get advice from a tuba player who knows the range and possibilities of the instrument. I will definitely act on some of the advice given. I will also sometime soon ask your advice on another piece of mine with score which has a lot of brass in it.

    Cheers

    Adrian
