Gavin Brown replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Was uns der murmelnde Bach erzählt
"Why don't you do the piece over with 20th century harmony?"

Franz-Josef Elmer replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Was uns der murmelnde Bach erzählt
"Hello Gav,Thanks for your warm comment. I appreciate that you think the piece is well done. But I'm not fully satisfied with my composition. The piece is too modest and too close to 19th century romantic music. My ambitions were much higher when I…"

Gavin Brown replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Was uns der murmelnde Bach erzählt
"Hello Franz-Josef,
I found this lovely. Nice use of arpeggios and melody, and nice way to repeat the pretty melody and move it around between clefs. The alternating 16th and triplet 8ths in the arpeggios made the piece! Well done! Best -
Gav"

Dave Ostrowski replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C (with improved fugue)
"Hi Franz,

Hi Franz,

Bravo on the improvements to the fugue.  I went back and listened again to the first version sandwiched between two 2nd versions.  I say it does a much better job holding it’s own against the preludium, and is very enjoyable…"

Jaime Chirif Watanabe replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C (with improved fugue)
"I think this is a beautiful piece. I like the way it develops, insisting on the principal motif without making it too obvious or repetitive. I really like the rhythm feel of the piece, i've always loved that kind of juxtaposition between two and…"

Franz-Josef Elmer replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C (with improved fugue)
"Thanks H.S. for your elaborate discussion of the fugue. This kind of response helps me a lot to improve my composition skills.
Currently I'm working at something new. May be in a few month I will revisit this fugue again."

H. S. Teoh replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C (with improved fugue)
"I feel that the prelude is still the stronger part of this piece. The fugue is better than before, but I still found that it didn't quite keep my interest. I'm not a fugue expert by any means, but I found that the contrasting rhythms didn't quite…"

H. S. Teoh replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C
"I think the prelude is a lot more substantial than the fugue; perhaps that's why the fugue feels inadequate, even if it might have been OK if it stood on its own. Maybe if the fugue was a bit more extensive you could balance it out, say add more…"

Franz-Josef Elmer replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C
"Thanks all of you for your comments. It is good to read that you like the prelude. I put a lot of effort to make it a coherent and balanced piece of music. I agree that the fugue hasn't the same stature as the prelude. Thus the combination isn't…"

Dave Ostrowski replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C
"Hi Franz,

3 listen's, here. I too really like the Preludium.  Very well done!  I feel the fugue could have a bolder harmonic language, as the prelude is pretty dynamic from a listening standpoint.  It would strike somewhat of a balance between the…"

Adrian Allan replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C
"Just looking at the score, would it not be clearer to notate those right hand bars of 3/4 as tied notes and keeping the 6/8 division in the middle of the bar? It's quite hard to read 6/8 in one hand and 3/4 in the other."

"I really liked the cross-rhythms in the prelude. Is this by any chance related to the Morse-Thue sequence you were working with last time, or is this something completely unrelated? I like how the cross-rhythms manage to keep interest in the plain…"

Michael Lofting replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Präludium und Fuge in C
"Hi Franz

I liked the praeludium. You called it traditional but it had a modern feel to it. Kept the interest going by the way you varied each section.

I felt the fugue lacked vitality and seemed an anticlimax after the praeludium. Perhaps putting…"

H. S. Teoh replied to Franz-Josef Elmer's discussion Herr Morse besucht Thule
"Maybe "boring" is the wrong word to use, then. :-)  I guess you want to convey the mood of being commonplace, or being calm or uneventful.  There are certainly ways of doing that, musically speaking, I'm just not sure how to derive it from the…"
