Deborah Young replied to Alexey Arkhipenko's discussion Short descriptions of composers
"Thanks so much. Within the past two years I've been learning about classical/new music composers on my own, and believe me I will keep coming back to this list. I only recently became aware of Arvo Part, and I like pretty much every one of his…"

Deborah Young replied to Eric Weissenborn's discussion Falling In Place. A soundtrack piece I finished
"I meant adding low and mid-low notes (from other instruments or the same, not sure) to add depth to all the high notes being played, add a "middle," but that's just a matter of individual taste, something you might want to explore.
Eric Weissenborn…"

Deborah Young replied to Eric Weissenborn's discussion Falling In Place. A soundtrack piece I finished
"Eric: I could imagine this piece as part of a romantic comedy. It has a "life goes on" feel for me, if that makes any sense. There were some tempo issues though. The recording eventually go faster but before the definite tempo change I heard some…"

Deborah Young replied to Sam Powys's discussion I've tried to write a Fugue, how have I done?
"Sam: I'm afraid I can't say much about the traditional fugue or add constructive comments about the score. I'm somewhat a newbie myself in this regard. But I can say that the subject was very simple, which is not a bad thing. I also thought of…"

Deborah Young replied to Deborah Young's discussion Horn trio PDF for critique
"Thank you so much, Tim. I made it a trill at first in measure 8, but then I read a french horn player online (he does movie scores) say he prefers this notation (although the notation he showed looked like 8th note tremolo). He did say this was…"

Tim Marko replied to Deborah Young's discussion Horn trio PDF for critique
"Unless you are writing a specific effect, the dynamics should all be marked the same.  The players/conductor will deal with the balance issues.
A  player is considered a "low horn" specialist primarily by virtue of his part.  They are still able to…"

Deborah Young replied to Deborah Young's discussion Horn trio PDF for critique
"Thanks, Bob. Your comments are very helpful. I knew that French horn note was pretty high, but I didn't know much about the player or whether he specializes in high or low horn. I thought that as a chamber player he probably does both (fingers…"

Deborah Young replied to Deborah Young's discussion Horn trio PDF for critique
"Thanks Lara. I wrote the piece as a mini trio for a competition that requires less than 2 minutes of music, but I had/have a plan that includes 32 more measures. So it would probably be about twice as long. The group is looking for collaborators for…"

Lara Poe replied to Deborah Young's discussion Horn trio PDF for critique
"Ok, great.  Well, there's some really nice lines in there and I imagine the presto will be a very effective contrast to the first section.  I'm curious- are you planning to make this longer or is this how long it will be?
As for the balance issues,…"

Lara Poe replied to Deborah Young's discussion Horn trio PDF for critique
"Just to clarify, this is a C score, right?  It looks to me like it probably is, based on the harmony and the key signature, but I just wanted to double check to make sure I'm not misreading it.  "

  • Thank you for welcome, Deborah!

  • Hi, Deborah,

Thank you so much for asking for my story for you live Skype blog cast!  I'm much more comfortable with the written word, however than I am live. Going back to school as a mature adult, with a life already in full swing, meant a few of... adjustments in my personal life. I would hate to say something "live" that might cause discomfort to anyone involved in those adjustments! I'm flattered you feel it worthy to share, and need to respectfully decline your offer. Your blog cast, "Are You Still Dreaming", sounds wonderful, and I wish you much success!

  • Deborah, you have a wonderful voice. I especially love "Elated".
The arrangement is quite effective and supports your voice quite well.
It was a pleasure to hear your music.
  • Debs, you really cheered me up with your ''classic combined with modern'' comment. It really fits in with my concept of eclecticism. It's a pleasure to compose for people like you. You're a gem.
