Clark Nichols replied to Noah Fraioli's discussion "The Forever Song" for Guitar Trio in F# Minor
"oh, okay, I was not aware that that type of tuning existed. It's definitely a weird tuning for me to look at. Just be forewarned, don't drop too much on acoustic instruments, and if you are writing in this tuning, just make sure to give the…"

Michael,
The quality of music and production is so out of place here amongst the kids or worse still the music educators masquerading as composers, I thought I was somewhere else.

Clark Nichols replied to Allison Danielle's discussion My first orchestra piece!
"a few things to watch:make sure the 1st violins get a break from fast notes (perhaps have the 2nd violins be up front?), don't want to wear them out, which is hard to do, but not impossible. The beginning,  the rests are kinda iffy to me. I think…"

Clark Nichols replied to Shanika Freeman's discussion Selling yourself short or having too much expectations
"I'd say have them make the first move when asking you to do the project. Then if it's under [x] (x being less than 900) charge them 1,500."

Clark Nichols replied to Kane Aoki's discussion Titles... (My worst enemy as a Composer)
"music first. My teacher's advice: Make the title seem metaphorical and spiritual, bot necessarily what the composition was about. If that was it my latest compositon would be called "I AM ANGRY BLARGH! I HATE YOU! DIE!""

Lara Poe replied to Clark Nichols's discussion Chaconne for Alto flute and guitar
"Overall, I like the harmonies and harmonic language.  However, you could try experimenting with tempo change and range more to add contrast.  I would personally like more contrast here, and the introduction felt a little long maybe.  But other than…"

I think meter changes should be avoided unless absolutely necessary, they definitely confuse the perfomer more than a tie or two. You might…"

Clark Nichols replied to Clark Nichols's discussion Chaconne for Alto flute and guitar

Chaconne? a tear jerker. expressive and emotional. So much so that it can be described as " The most pathetic music on Earth". Vitali's Chaconne in G minor for violin is an example.

  • So, I just synced my iPod touch with my iTunes library for the first time since I reinstalled Windows yesterday. While scrolling through my artists, your name popped up. I'm not sure how it got in there, but I thought it was kind of funny. Haha...

  • Hey.  Yes, I live in Japan. It's great here, I've been in the Tokyo area for around 10 years now.

  • 呵呵,你的照片中有两个人,所以我说:你们好。

    原来你在学汉语,很高兴遇到你。

    你的音乐也很好听,谢谢你的分享。

    好好学习,天天向上。

  • nice tunes. go listen to some mahler!! i suggest his 5th symphony, or 6th symphony, and get the scores from http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Mahler,_Gustav

listen to the music, and follow the scores at the same time.... it opens up a whole new world of orchestration and musical gesture. in particular, check out the "adagietto" from his 5th symphony. beautiful!
