I am an amateur pianist who, at age 61, started composing music in the classical tradition. Actually, I did write a few small snippets when I was in my teens. In my 40s, I joined an English country dance band and write four little waltzes—things around 32 bars long, just a melody and chords. I also wrote one or two pieces in the contra dance style. That was it, until I started working with MuseScore and creating some serious music (I've since graduated to Sibelius).
My first piece was for an oddball collection of orchestral instruments. I planned to use the music as background for a little video I had made, but the music went its own way.
Just to keep things simple, my second attempt was at a symphonic suite. This time I did a lot of reading on composing and instrumentation.
Realizing that getting an orchestra to perform a piece by a novice composer was going to be difficult, I have started writing for smaller ensembles: currently, string quartet, wind quintet and violin/cello.
My composing style is instinctive, relying somewhat on my basic knowledge of music theory but mostly on having heard or performed a lot of classical pieces over the years.I have relied on feedback from one or two friends with a classical music background.
I look forward to seeing what my more experienced fellow composers are up to!
