    Yes, it is true. Most often one learns about sonata form that way (i.e to repeat the 2nd theme in the same octave). However, my teacher was Willie Gartsman, a professor with the St. Petersburg Conservatory for many years, and so I learned sonata form as taught by the Russian school, which specifies that the repeat of the 2nd theme be an octave higher. Of course, in this day and age one can do what one wants. But in the case of your string quartet, I think taking the 2nd theme up an octave might help by providing more contrast between themes.

    For instance, the Tchaikovsky String Quartet No.1  (http://classical-music-online.net/en/production/6528#) handles the material this way to great effect.

    I'm new here as well. I've listened to your string quartet exposition a couple of times now, and I noticed one point that you *might* consider. From my limited understanding, in strict sonata form, the 2nd theme is initially presented in the dominant key (i.e the key that is a perfect fifth higher than the tonic) and then when that 2nd theme is repeated it is preferred to repeat it an octave higher than heard the first time. Of course, many composers prefer not to be so constrained ... and likewise you may decide to ignore this convention.(Here's a diagram: http://beethovensonatas.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/sonataform1.gif)

    For your piece, the constraint to take the repeat of the 2nd theme up an octave will present some range problems. The work-around is to re-arrange the initial presentation of the 2nd theme, giving it to the upper range of the 2nd violin (or another lower string), and then upon the repeat to give it to the first violin. Again, this is a nit-picky point, but I wanted to mention it because it can be so effective in certain situations.

    Keep working on your piece. Composing is the best way to learn to appreciate compositions.
