Born in 1985 in Sofia in a family of musicians, Alexander Lialios started to play the piano at an early age. In 2004, he graduated simultaneously the Sofia Music High School and the American College of Sofia. In 2008, he received his BA degree from Yale College, where he studied piano with Prof. Anna Grinberg and Prof. Wei-Yi Yang while also having the opportunity to work with other faculty, such as Prof. Boris Berman, Prof. Peter Frankl. At Yale, he also studied composition with Prof. Kathryn Alexander, Prof. Michael Friedman, and other faculty members. In 2010, Alexander Lialios completed a specialization in piano at the Frankfurt Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst with Prof. Catherine Vickers. In the next year, he completed the MA degree program in piano at the Sofia Academy of Music (under Prof. Atanas Kurtev) while also working on a regular basis with Prof. Einar-Steen Nokleberg. In 2015, he completed a Ph.D. program in piano performance (under Prof. Atanas Kurtev) at the Sofia Academy of Music and defended a dissertation (of 194 pages) on the topic of thematic design and melodic development in Schubert’s piano sonatas. The Ph.D. program included a series of concerts in which Dr. Lialios performed 13 of the sonatas by Franz Schubert, as well as many works by other composers related to the style. Alexander Lialios has won awards at a number of international piano competitions and festivals, such as: the International Competition of the Music Festival of Balashicha, Moscow, Russia (I. Prize); “GrandPrize Virtuoso” – Vienna (I Prize in Chamber music – with Hristo Ivanov, cello); the “Carl Filtsch” International Piano Competition, Sibiu, Romania (III. Prize in Piano and I. Prize in Composition); the “Albert Roussel” International Piano Competition, Sofia, Bulgaria; the San Daniele Summer Music Academy, San Daniele, Italy; the “Roussalka” Music Festival, Varna, Bulgaria (I. Prize); the Panhellenic Piano Competition in Thessaloniki, Greece (I. Prize), “Music and Earth” (Sofia), and others. In 2019, Alexander Lialios also completed a specialization in Composition with Prof. Atanas Atanasov at the "Pancho Vladigerov" National Academy of Music in Sofia. Alexander Lialios performs on a regular basis as soloist (in recital and with symphony orchestras) and as chamber musician. He has performed numerous times in countries such as the USA, Austria, Germany, Italy, Russia, Greece, Romania, Japan. His repertoire ranges from the early Baroque and pre-Classical composers to the music of the 21-st century. At present, Alexander Lialios is faculty member at the “Prof. P. Vladigerov” National Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria. His latest initiatives include the recording of a CD-release of three Schubert sonatas and a project which combines music (performance and composition) and visual art (painting), known as the “SYN(es)THESIS” Project (https://www.facebook.com/SYNesTHESISProject).
