Hi everyone,

I would like to learn how to write for strings.

i thought i would recreate some scores in my DAW (Cubase Elements 9.5) to do so.

(I have the "Cinematic Studio Strings" Library)

i searched for scores, but i didn't really know where to start.

i found this piece on youtube, which i liked, but i couldn't find the sheet for free and if i possible i would not want to spend money for now.

So my Question is:

Do you have suggestions which scores to start with?

I would like the piece to be just strings, not full orchestra yet, kind of like the one in the video above.

Thank you :)

  • Google, IMSLP, and look for Michael's suggestions there.

  • Thanks a lot!
    I'll look for those

  • Although not for a conventional string orchestra - it's divided into: 2 Vlns, 2 Vlas, 2 Vcls and DB, can I suggest Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night" Op 4. It's a wonderful piece of string writing. The score is available on IMSLP but there are two versions - the original as a string sextet and the string orchestra version.

Another one that may be of interest is Vaughan WIlliams' "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis." It uses a string quartet, chamber group and string orchestra. Also available on IMSLP.

Both are out of copyright. Both works have some lovely effects so maybe worth listening and if something catches you attention you can see how the composers did it.

Long ago I started with Mozart's Eine Kleine.

Also if you aren't already familiar with different string articulations it's worth picking them up so you know what others are talking about. Excuse me if you already know this stuff. Otherwise here's a glossary:

They transcribe across all the strings family.

    Good luck.

  • Hi Felix

Vaughan Williams'  Thomas Tallis fantasia really struck a chord with me - I bought it pretty cheap from amazon.
