Hi All,
As I'm new to the world of VSTI's I thought I'd post a discussion to get some views.
Are there any others you think I should look into before taking the plunge? LASS, Symphobia... etc...
Cheers

HI Guys!
No one ever mention Hollywood strings. How does it compare to LASS?
Cheers

You're right Ray. That's what it comes down to in the end but if you are thinking about buying a new library it's interesting to here what people say. Especially e.g. if someone has both LASS and Hollywood Strings. Ease of use, bugs and installation problems etc...

I think that not many understand the following paradox: The better the VSTi is, the worse it is for music creation.
I do not laugh. Music is about individuality. The most popular set of VST instruments and methods makes all 200.000 compositions similar to each other. There can be no individuality in 200.000 similar compositions. Only cliche.

I understand where you are coming from Andrew, however, the same VST used by a different person produces a very different end product based on their knowledge, approach and skills. I believe that Individuality is born from the creator not from the fact they may use a different raw product. I can get a variety of very different sounds from just a single sound or patch. It's how we weave the sounds that makes us unique.
I think that the primary thing Andrew's getting at is the recording will sound the same. You can have two different sounding scores, but if you're using the same recordings (even if you tweak them better/worse than somebody else), they're going to start sounding the same after a while. You can only do so much to them.
As far as tweaking articulations go, I'm in complete agreement with you. But the recordings themselves can become cliche via the sound of the instruments; there I have to agree with Andrew.
Does that help? :-)
Andrew, I do think you have a point with libraries such as Symphobia or Hollywoodwinds giving everyone access to exactly the same pre-orchestrated effects. On the other hand there are an increasing number of high quality expressive libraries (such as LASS) which work far better with good orchestration and can sound more individual to the composer.
I'm sure I agree with your point (don't rely too heavily on pre-built stuff otherwise you become a clone), Ray's point (you also need the skill to use the samples) and Chris's point (the ideal is still to work with live players) however I think it is more useful if people can ask for sample advice on this forum without the threads getting sidetracked every time.
