take a guess?

I was asking myself internally whether any other composer's music had ever gotten to me as deep as Bach's.

But it took me a long long time to identify who that could be.  Strange, is it not, that I had almost completely forgotten about him.  Like there's no place in my current life for him anymore.

But there he is, that's him without a doubt.  Completely amazing, incredible music.

Just for fun, does anybody want to take a guess?

I will reveal the answer in 24 hours time (at 7:20 pm Pacific time Wednesday, save for the case of internet access delay).

If anyone guesses correctly, I will mail to them a bottle of Portuguese wine (for non-drinkers, a bottle of prime olive oil). This is a promise, as long as they live at a location where there is mail delivery and where wine bottle (or olive oil) imports are allowed.

The composer in question is very well known to most people.  And, musically speaking, you all know me, right?

Mariza

  • Hi Mariza,

Although i am just getting to know you, I'll take a wild guess and say Chopin.

  • Hello Gregorio.

Perfect guess. Chopin is my second influence but not anywhere near a top favorite composer.

You are allowed another 99 guesses.

    (I feel very very safe.)

Oh, lovely! I'm listening to him right now on youtube!

Thank you for introducing him, and for the sportmanship.

If you have the time and inclination, there's another 99 guesses to go.

Which reminds me of why the Italians hired Swiss watch makers to off set the tilt in the tower of Piza. The city fathers could have put any kind of weigh up there to counteract the dangerous way the tower was leaning, but they decided on a clock because they knew it is a terrible thing to have the inclination but not the time.

  • Ondib,

No, the name's not on that list or that website, either. He's an instrumental composer but not strictly a classical composer.
His music blends classical with other genres, particularly so-called world music, folk, electronic, new-age, and other...

You can have another guess if you want.

And I was going to ask for a hint :)

This is much to go on… (certainly narrows the field considerably).  Curious…

I'll have to think a bit on this… Various names come to mind…. however , i just want to pick One of them… (I am trying to tune in my psychic antenna…)

    Maybe, Jarre?

  • No, no, not J. M. Jarre.  I don't want to imply you'd have the patience to go on with this, but feel free to keep guessing.  I'm listening to Jarre right now with my earbuds and it's boring me considerably.

The composer I had in mind is, in my opinion, completely innovative and unique and his music is extraordinary IMO.  I remember as a teenager going into a record store in Rua Nova do Almada and asking to play his LP that someone told me about (they would play a few minutes of any LP for you, with headphones).  I didn't have the money to purchase it, but I tried to look like I might.  I was so enthralled I wouldn't let them stop the turn table.  I purchased it some time later.

I hope you will still speak to me after tonight...

  • Thank you, Gregorio, for your patience.

I think you have good a good quality psychic antenna, so there's some chance.
