Composers' Forum

Music Composers Unite!

MESSAGE TO ALL !
It appears that this morning I have a "spoof" email purporting to come from a member of this forum. It was asking me to contact privately, as whatever was going to be said, could not be disclosed on a public site - needless to say, I did not click the private email link sent with it...  sending of private links is something I know we do not normally do on this forum... It was using the Composers' Forum email address, and there was a link to our forum for me to send a reply, but this was not the usual kind of link, as contained the person's name.
I have checked, and this name does appear in amongst our members, but with no photo or proper picture. Just wanted to let someone / others know. Hope it turns out to be legit. but not sure.

Same thing here.

There was a spammer on the site who was removed this morning. Please let me know if you get any further messages -

Great.... good that we are all vigilant !

Yes, I received a similar message, in the form of a comment on my profile which, thankfully, has since been removed. I see that Gav has removed this person, but for clarity, were they actually a member or can anyone see and post comments on our profiles? If member profiles are publicly visible, that would seem to be a privacy issue. And if they have to be a member, I recall having to wait for approval before I could post anything, so I'm wondering how this spammer managed to slip through this step, or whether they fooled a moderator into allowing them on. Seems like a LOT of trouble for someone to go through just so they could spam the forum members...

Just looking for a slight clarification on this point.

Thanks,

Liz

===>Yes, they were a member. Anyone can see the site content, but only members can post comments

===>Yes, membership requests require a moderator approval and yes, sometimes bad ones slip through

Ok Gav - I guess it happens sometimes. I still wonder at the motivation of someone who goes through the trouble of describing themselves convincingly as a composer, just so they can spam the forum. Takes all kinds I guess.

Thanks again for all you do here.
