  • Hi Oscar,

I listened to it twice, and spot listened a bit after that. This is an ambititous work for you, at least of the works I have heard of yours. I think it shows a stretching of approaches into new territory, which for me is a line that I like to see composers cross, so on that: kudos! There are some good things in this: it has a high level of action in it, so moves along nicely. You seem to have an ability to draw vernacular sounds from your instruments which at times struck me as rather sophisticated. Some motifs in here sound quite musical and memorable, e.g., the syncopated rhythm in b. 19 and elsewhere. The beginning of the tranquil section in b. 78 I also found effective, particularly.

If I had one area where I would offer critique, it would be, for want of a better word, "trajectory." By this I mean that throughout much of the piece, as various things were happening, I did not feel like there was a driving force that was leading inevitably somewhere. Yes, the piece was moving forward, but I couldn't grasp an underlying logic that was driving it. So when a new bit started, I couldn't reflect that what had happened before had led me here, and when it ended, I felt a lack of resolution in places. The end, therefore, came to me as a surprise, and I didn't feel a build towards it.

Hope that information is useful to you, and thanks for posting, keep it up!

  • This is accomplished writing ! And yes I agree with Gav's comment that I feel with this piece you've broken into new grounds for yourself ( based on having a few other pieces of yours).  I particularly liked the "Breakout" Section. ( Almost had a bit of Janacek string quartet feel to it). Very engaging piece. I look forward to your next creations !

  • Thank you so much Gav. Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment and for taking a listen! I will definitely take your thoughts into consideration. Interesting points you have raised up that I haven't thought about before :)

  • I really enjoyed this. I’m not going to analyse it that much. Sometimes it’s just enough to enjoy the music. Are you going to publish the other movements too? I’m looking forward to hearing them if you do.
