When harmonizing a melody for simple jazz tunes (i.e: standards), should I still apply common "rules" for voice independence, or will it just clutter up the main melody. Is for example paralell fifths similar motion still to be mostly avoided, or would be a good idea to include such aspects for the sake of thickening the melody? I am just looking for guidelines

  • I would just harmonies it to where it sounds the best to you. Part-Writing rules are more or less just for study and analysis. In a sketch I would just write simply just the chord names and when you begin writing in the ensemble, write the harmonies out in a way that is idiomatic to the instruments you are writing for.
