This quartet is considered by many as the greatest string quartet ever written. Leonard Bernstein recorded a magnificent performance with string orchestra of which he said (if I remember correctly) that it meant to him so muchlike no other performance he ever did!! I orchestrated the outstanding Finale a few years ago for full symphony orchestra and now I added also the deeply moving slow 6th movement as the introduction to the Finale: http://www.gerdprengel.de/op131-6-7_orch.mp3
Would you say, that the trumpets and timpani are too loud in the Finale?

  • this is the greatest quartet written by Beethoven at the very least and should be left well alone -- unlike your very nice arrangement of the piano trio, I find this totally tasteless and couldn't bear to listen to the whole thing. Very sorry! I have no intention of listening to Bernstein abusing the work either, although at least for strings only makes slightly more sense.
