Hi,

I'd be grateful if you would have a listen to one of my pieces I have been working on. It is not finished yet. It is written for woodwind and percussion. It is my first attempted at writing 20th Century Music/ New Music. It is was not written to imitate a pacific composer or style. As I have written it. So I wrote what I thought sounded write.

Any ideas and suggestions welcome. If you don't like it please tell me.

  • I like this very much.  Nice use of space, dynamics and repeated motifs. If I was going to be critical, maybe the snare sounds a bit too 'up front' for an ensemble like this. But over all it sounds great.

  • Thank you for your comment Jim. Yes I agree not sure if I should leave the Snare out altogether and just use the Xylophone.

  • I probably didn't make my point very clearly. I don't think there is a 'problem' with the snare compositionally - I just didn't think it sounded quite right in recording terms - it sounded too 'close' to me.  Personal view and my experience is limited.

  • Having looked at previous pieces I think I should have put this in the Suggestions Wanted/Open to Revision section. I did not realize there was a section on the forum. I am new to this forum so I do apologize.

  • Thank you

Very nice work. I thought the snare drum worked admirably.

  • This piece has good bones but it still needs a little work.

Notationally you should revisit how the notes are spelled. I would also like to hear more dynamic contrast as well. Lastly, I felt that the snare was highly under utilized. You could almost combine both Xylophone and Snare parts together to be played by one performer. I hope to hear more of this piece as it develops.
