Composers' Forum

Music Composers Unite!

Hello! Did you think about creating orchestra or chamber music in collaboration, sharing ideas and workflow? Every composer has his own workflow: let's join different workflows and approaches, learning from each other and creating a new type of collaborative composition.

Where? Online, from your smartphone, tablet or PC.

Why? Meet, discuss, share, learn, compose.

What style of music we are going to compose? Orchestral and chamber music of tonal and/or atonal quality - maybe only tonal - maybe only atonal - depending on what composers will get to the meeting.

How much knowledge of music composition is required? You have to be able to compose a whole piece. No other degree or experience is required. Emerging composers are welcome! Do not be afraid that you have too little or too much experience - try to participate! Music analysts and philosophers are also welcome, because we will also discuss general form and style questions - not just compose music.

What are we going to do?

- Discuss our different approaches, workflows, styles and ideas.

- Choose the goal for our collaboration music piece (write music in some particular style, write music for a painting, write music for a poem, write music for a composition contest...)

- Plan our composition process combining our different workflows. Create a scheme of our music piece.

- Compose!

When?

- Every saturday at 16:00 GMT (this is 18:00 Berlin or 12:00 New york). First meeting will be on April, 9.

- I will post a link to join the meeting about 10 minutes before this time in this forum thread.

- Meeting will be recorded as video and will be available to view later.

What tools can we use?

- Google Hangouts On Air for video conference and screen sharing (link will be posted)

Google Drive for a whiteboard

Flat for collaborative work with scores

... more

What do you need to participate?

- Smartphone OR tablet OR computer. Best way is to use computer with webcamera and a USB microphone, that you can put close to you. The better your sound quality - the more interesting a collaboration will be.

- You need to have a Google account (you can register here).

- You do not necessarily need to use your webcamera. If you choose, you can use only voice communication

Official language of this meeting is English.

I will host the meeting. My english language is not mother-tongue, but I will try my best. Please, if someone with good english can co-host this meeting with me, it will be very helpful.

Let's discuss this idea. Frankly speaking, I am very excited to start! :) Please reply if you are in.

Alexey,

Can you define in some approximate way what is meant by "workflow"?

Thank you!

Yes, he can define the term "workflow."

But give him a chance to put on his pince-nez, first.

A lorgnette with seem to suit Alexey best, in my opinion.

Hi! Composition workflow is the process starting from the initial idea to compose a piece -- to the finally composed music piece:

- Do you start with a scheme?

- Do you compose from start or from finish?

- Do you start with melody, with harmony or with melody+harmony at once?

- Do you sing, or compose with instrument or write on paper or write directly into notation software? Do you improvise to compose? Do you record to compose? Do you listen to music in the notation software?

- When do you get inspired? Can you work without inspiration?

Aside from these general questions, there are also different approaches to music form, to writing abstract music, to writing music that reflects some particular atmosphere, feeling, idea.

- Do you start with a scheme?

Yes, I have a scheme to destroy the entire solar system, unless Superman and/or Captain America prevent me from doing so. Since they are very powerful, I scheme in other ways, to produce music that will undermine capitalist society from its foundations, first. Then I'll go on from there.

- Do you compose from start or from finish?

Using time travel technology, I go a short distance into the future, and bring back the final product into the present moment, starting with what I have finished, and then finishing with what I had started (which was originally what I had finished with, at the end, when I began).

- Do you start with melody, with harmony or with melody+harmony at once?

In reality, in modern music, contemporary music there can be no such thing as melody or harmony. To say otherwise is to spit on the corpse of Pierre Boulez who so recently died. How can any of us do that? So my inner self suggests to me that I start with pure IDEAS, in the Pythagorean, Platonic or Hegelian sense, and then clothe these ideas with the raiment of sound. If certain sounds become juxtaposed within the same time frame, then that's THEIR BUSINESS, and I won't interfere, or call what they are doing "harmony," "melody," "polyphony" or "perfidy."

- Do you sing, or compose with instrument or write on paper or write directly into notation software?

If I sing, my dog might like it. In fact, she does. But human beings generally will not like it, and since I am so loathe to give offense where no offense is due, I avoid singing (out loud) [except in the shower—maybe]. I don't write directly into my notation software, or my notation software might write directly into me; I believe in the Kantian Categorical Imperative "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can, at the same time, will that it should become a universal law." When Kant says, "only," I believe he means ONLY. I don't want my software writing directly into me. So I let the software, God, the Universe, the inner light within the MUSICAL IDEA, to write itself, however it wishes to be written. If the software allows me to participate, then we may work together. I won't write on paper which is made from trees or recycled paper because, how would you like to be recycled or written upon? (Occasionally, I do write on paper, but that's only when I fall into a state of utilitarian moral relaxation, solipsism, or moral relativism. Dostoevsky questioned whether it would be right to torture one single child, if you could create a perfect utopia for all other human beings for the rest of time. He concluded, "No, that was not right." So why should I write on a piece of paper, really?)

- Do you improvise to compose? Do you record to compose? Do you listen to music in the notation software?

All life is improvisashio, so how can a person not improvisationize, in the spur of the moment, spontanatiously, while adlibbing or making impromptu sounds ex tempore? The question "do you improvise to compose" is like the question, "do you eat to live, or live to eat;" in other words, "do you compose in order to improvise; or do you improvise in order to expose, depose, repose, or simply pose?" Of course, everyone listens to the music IN the notation software, because it's very comfortable in there, if you have a small fireplace next to the Intel chip, and a place to put your drink inside the soft drive.

- When do you get inspired?

When do you NOT get inspired? God is crying out, screaming and shouting at you; the Nine Muses (daughters of Mnemosyne) are bellowing, dancing in ballet tutus right before you, singing full length epic operas to you twenty-four hours a day, painting portraits of your great aunt, playing the calliope at full volume; and Apollo is banging his lyre over your head in order to get you to hear him. Look at a particle of dust on the floor and a thousand symphonies will spring out at you without your having to lift a finger, and they will imbed themselves and their IDEA into your brain, via your soul and spirit. Drink a cup of tea, and the ichor of the Olympians will flow into your blood stream, and you will, perforce, compose the music that destiny meant you to compose.

Can you work without inspiration?

No one can, since inspiration is omnipresent, even if you are not consciously aware of it.

Ondib, I like your description of your music composition workflow, which obviously was dressed with a good portion of humor. I see that my questions about workflow work better for traditional composition. But I will be glad to supplement them with questions that will work for these "experimental hardcore" styles also. Can you think of these questions?

As for the inspiration, it can be omnipresent, but it is useless until it is absorbed by a human. I am talking not about inspiration outside the brain, but that inside the brain, which helps and makes us create art.

Do you want to talk about it in the webcast?

Alexey,

Thank you very much for explaining.

I don't know enough to join in, but I laud you for your initiative, and I hope a good number of people will join and make it a success.

Alexey,

On the header, you wrote:

Did you mean to write April 9 ?

If so, note that you can edit the message header. ;)

Alexey said, most wisely,

"As for the inspiration, it can be omnipresent, but it is useless until it is absorbed by a human. I am talking not about inspiration outside the brain, but that inside the brain, which helps and makes us create art."

Yes, I agree. And not only in the brain but in the soul (if you will permit me the use of that term. On your other questions, and comments, I will have to think.

I believe the pre-Soviet Russian Calendar differs from the Western one, and as you may know, the Russian Orthodox Easter will be celebrated on May 1, this year. (It may be considered also ironic, or an historical oddity that Easter Sunday in Russia would fall on the International Working Man's Holiday, MAY DAY, and that might just turn countless brains over and upside down. I don't know if or when that has happened in Modern Times, since the dissolution of the USSR.) Next year, the Russian Easter Sunday will fall on April 16.

So, all humor aside, and being almost (but not quite entirely) serious, I would say this: I believe March 9 on the Russian calendar falls sometime in April this year, but I'm not sure when.

Could you clarify, O.O. what is the date of the International Working Woman's Holiday?

Thank you.

P.S.  Whatever computer or tablet you're using today inserts your text in huge font size. Do you not see it appear very large? Is it possible to fix that?  I wonder whether it'd work if you click on the HTML button (top right) and enter at the start: <font size=9>

(Also it's either red or blue (depending on the post) - I'm not sure that's intentional.)

We are not going to do the crazy spam font. Again, you are being very disrespectful to the original poster. I am going to change all the fonts back to something close to what everyone else is doing and delete any post that resemble spam.

On the font question, I was really just experimenting with different size fonts. For my eyes, and my screen, these fonts at size 12 and below are a bit too small and difficult to read.

I would like every one to use a size 18 or 20. I can read that much more easily. But I suppose everyone has a different preference. I never intended (even in my wildest imagination) any disrespect to the original poster, or to anyone else by experimenting with larger fonts.

[I might theorize that the persistent posting of anti-Semitic statements, and links, and lavish praise of anti-Semitic and racist propaganda might cause more concern, and merit more of a reprimand than larger than normal fonts. But again, that's just me.]
